Charles was born on May 12,1928 to Silas and Irene Hughes in Dodson, Louisianaand moved with his family to Shreveport when he was 14 years old. He was a proud 1945 graduate of Byrd High School. He began his career with ARKLA Gas Company in 1946 and retired from ARKLA in 1985 after 39 years of service. He met and married the love of his life, Anna Belle Vise Hughes, in 1948 and enjoyed over 59 years of raising their family together.
Charles was a man of many talents who found joy in a wide variety of hobbies. Charles and Anna Belle loved to travel, and over the years they visited all 50 states, most of Canada and 9 foreign countries. He loved to brag that he celebrated one of his birthdays on two continents, Europe and Africa! The highlight of their travel was their trip to the Holy Land where he was re-baptized in the Jordan River and took a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. Charles also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and cooking, especially making sausage balls and gumbo for family gatherings. Music was also a large part of his life. He shared his musical gifts with others leading music ministry at several churches and revivals across 11 states with his dear friend R.F. Gates through a ministry of laymen called Men For Jesus.
It has been said that you experience someone’s life by what they make and Charles made a lot. He made music, he made treasures out of wood, including something special for each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he made fruits and vegetables in his gardens, and he made his faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the most important aspect of his life. In so doing, he made disciples of Christ. Charles was an active member of Brookwood Baptist Church, and his strong Christian faith will be remembered by all who knew him.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Anna Belle Hughes, his parents, his four sisters and his son, Charles B. Hughes, Jr. He is survived by his two daughters, Carolyn Davis and husband Robert M. Davis, III of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Debra Leckie and husband Bill Leckie of Longview, Texas; four grandchildren, Kimberly and Mike Belanger, Kristina and David Funes, Sarah and Rik Hedlund, and Timothy and Katie Leckie; ten great-grandchildren, Brooks Belanger and wife Gillian Belanger, Brennan Belanger, Alexandra and Olivia Funes, Piper, Charlie, Jace and Parker Hedlund, and TJ and Anna Leckie.
