Double-duty effort key to Gents’ football triumph; Caddo Magnet’s Waddell sparkles in comeback

A player producing on both sides of the ball helped Centenary capture a down-to-the-wire Homecoming win in football and a local swimmer made a triumphant return to competition for the Ladies last weekend.

FOOTBALL:  The Gents defeated Austin College in a thriller by a score of 26-23 last Saturday night in front of a spirited Homecoming crowd in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Atkins Field.

The Gents improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SCAC and now are 1-2 at home this season.

Sophomore Michael Cunningham lived every defensive players’ dream on Saturday as he scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and finished with three carries for 13 years. Cunningham, a tight end turned defensive end who got his first taste on the offensive side of the ball, scored on runs of 8 and 4 yards in the first half. He also played his usual excellent game defensively, finishing with four tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble and one pass breakup.

The Gents have a bye week and don’t play on Saturday. They return to action on Halloween, Oct. 31, in their final home game of the season against Lyon College in SCAC play at 6 o’clock.

SWIMMING: The Ladies and Gents wrapped up their opening weekend of competition with a second dual meet against McMurry University inside the Centenary Fitness Center last Saturday morning. The Ladies and Gents faced the War Hawks on Friday evening in the first of two meets.

Senior Hannah Waddell, a former Caddo Magnet star, shined in her return to the pool after missing last season due to injury as she recorded an impressive six individual wins for the Ladies. Waddell was also a member of the Ladies’ winning teams in both the 200-medley and 200 free relays. Waddell has cemented her legacy as one of the top swimmers in the D3 era of the program in just two seasons and now has a staggering 35 individual wins in her career.

MEN’S SOCCER: The Gents (3-8, 0-5 SCAC) lost a pair of conference contests at home last weekend, 1-0 to Concordia University and 2-0 to Texas Lutheran University. Centenary, 3-3 at home this season has lost six in a row overall.

The Gents are on the road this weekend in league play against Austin College and LeTourneau University.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Ladies (2-8-1, 0-3-1 SCAC) dropped two conference matches last weekend, 4-2 at Concordia and 4-0 by Texas Lutheran at home.

The Ladies, 1-4 at home this season, are on the road this weekend against Austin College and LeTourneau.

VOLLEYBALL: The Ladies (1-13) stepped out of conference play on Tuesday and were swept in a non-conference match by Southern Arkansas University at home.

Centenary, 0-7 in league play this season, goes on the road this weekend to play three league contests in Sherman, Texas against Concordia, Texas Lutheran, and the University of St. Thomas on the Austin College campus as part of a SCAC crossover event.

MEN’S GOLF: The Gents shot an 84-over par 936 (315-307-314) to finish in ninth place at the Texas A&M-Victoria Fall Classic held at The Club at Colony Creek in Victoria, Texas.

Freshman Oscar Grinsfelder had the Gents’ top finish, 12th after shooting a 3-over par 216. He shot a season-low 1-under 70 in round two sandwiched in between rounds of 74 and 72.

CHEER: The Centenary Cheer team capped off a busy month of performances and activities on Homecoming weekend.

The team performed at the Red River Revel, walked in the Bossier High School Homecoming Parade and the annual “Walk Like MADD” gymnastics event, performed at the annual Maroon Madness event showcasing the basketball and gymnastics programs, and at the Homecoming football game last Saturday.
