The collision of unbeaten Haughton and one-loss Airline Friday night is undeniably the top game on the Week 8 local high school football schedule, but there’s more premium matchups.

Two are non-district contests in south Louisiana. Parkway travels to Gonzales to play at one-loss East Ascension, in what looks to unfold into a high-scoring battle.

Calvary takes its unbeaten record to New Orleans and meets Archbishop Shaw. The Cavaliers are top-ranked in the LSWA’s Class 2A Top 10 while the Eagles are No. 4 in Class 4A. Both teams reached their state finals last December but were beaten, Shaw on a last-play field goal.

Nine games will be played in Bossier or Caddo Parish.

Among them, Evangel visits Byrd and will play for the first time in three seasons without injured senior quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston, who is likely to miss at least the next two games after his right (throwing)  shoulder was hurt Friday night in the first quarter of a non-district loss to Cornerstone Christian.

Tests Monday showed no ligament or bone damage, according to his father, Evangel offensive coordinator Shaun Houston. Freshman Briggs Berlin, who played capably in relief Friday, will get his first varsity start for the Eagles.

Undefeated Green Oaks comes off an open date and visits District 1-2A rival Homer.
