Week 7 storylines provide highs and lows

FALCONS TAKING OFF:  Northwood’s resurgence from a tough start has relied on a dominant running game guided by quarterback Peyton Boone (3) along with aggressive defensive play. (Journal photo by KEVIN PICKENS)

Week 7 of the high school football season provided the most unfortunate headline of the year, while Northwood confirmed it has regained the form the Falcons have displayed the last several seasons and Booker T. Washington rallied to stay in the upper crust of District 1-4A.

Evangel’s Houston injuries shoulder in loss to Cornerstone Christian

Evangel quarterback Peyton “Pop” Houston injured his throwing shoulder Friday as he was tackled in the first half of a 49-23 loss to Cornerstone Christian.

The Eagles led 7-0 at the time of the injury, and Houston did not return. He wore a sling on the ECA sideline the rest of the night.

Freshman Briggs Berlin came in and threw a pair of touchdown passes, but the Eagles couldn’t keep pace with Cornerstone, which entered the game ranked No. 43 in the High School Football America Top 300.

Berlin will be under center if Houston misses extended time.

Evangel (4-3, 3-0) plays winless Byrd before finishing the regular season with Airline and Haughton, which are also both undefeated in district play.

Northwood repeats dominant performance with big win against Minden

With a 1-4 start and a blowout loss to North DeSoto two weeks ago, it wasn’t crazy to think that 2026 just wasn’t Northwood’s year.

But the Falcons have had the best in-season turnaround in the area with dominant wins over BTW (58-26) and Minden (56-20).

The rest of the Falcons (3-4, 2-1 District 1-4A) offense has caught up with their offensive line, and the result are a pair of 30-point wins in which the offense has scored more than 50 points.

Northwood scored the first four touchdowns with two via quarterback Peyton Boone runs to build an insurmountable lead, eventually going up 41-6 at the half.

The Falcons rushed for nearly 250 yards, and their defense created short fields most of the night.

BTW gets back on track with comeback win against Bossier

After a deflating 58-26 loss to Northwood in Week 6, Booker T. Washington needed a shot in the arm as District 1-4A continued against Bossier.

The Lions (5-2, 2-1) proved that they are in top half of the league with a comeback 26-20 on the road against the Bearkats on Friday.

Weirdly enough, the comeback came in the first half.

In the centerpiece of its 100th homecoming celebration, Bossier built its first half lead on the back of running back Braylyn Williams, but BTW quarterback Devion Stewart led the Lions back to tie the game at 20-20 at halftime.

The Lions scored the only touchdown in the second half for the six-point win. Stewart threw and ran for a score with his favorite target being Tramell Howard-Choyce, who finished with 115 receiving yards and a touchdown.

BTW still has its district fate in control, but it’s not an easy path, with a Woodlawn team that is knocking on the door in Week 8 followed by district favorite North DeSoto and Minden.

Green Oaks, Loyola take week off

Green Oaks had a scheduled bye for Week 7, but Loyola’s Messmer Stadium was empty unexpectedly Friday night.

The Flyers were supposed to play district opponent Carroll, but the Bulldogs had the rest of their season cancelled after an altercation between players and opposing fans a couple weeks ago. Loyola registered a 2-0 forfeit win on its homecoming weekend.

The Giants are 6-0 and one of three undefeated Shreveport-Bossier teams (Haughton and Calvary).

Green Oaks has a test at Homer this week before finishing the regular season with North Caddo and a potential District 1-2A championship game against Calvary.
