Homecoming weeks everywhere are filled with joyful moments, and Centenary is no different.
But Thursday morning, there’s also a time of remembrance, with an event honoring the memory of a former Ladies gymnast and reminding everyone of the consequences of driving when impaired.
The gymnastics program will hold its annual “Walk Like MADD” event on Thursday morning at 11 at Jones-Rice Field on campus.
It honors the memory of former Centenary gymnast Sylvia Keiter, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver years ago, when she stopped to help someone who had been in an accident. The walk helps raise awareness for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and free T-shirts are available for all in attendance.
FOOTBALL: A same-season rematch is a rarity in football but that’s the centerpiece of Saturday’s Homecoming festivities on campus.
Centenary takes on Austin College for the second time in three weeks and hopes for more of the same. The Gents eased past the ‘Roos 37-13 on Oct. 3 in Sherman, Texas in the previous meeting this season. They’ll get it on again Saturday at 6 at Atkins Field in a game that, unlike the first one, will count in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings.
That’s good news for the Gents (1-4, 0-1 SCAC), who lost their conference opener 41-20 to Hendrix College last Saturday afternoon in Conway, Ark.
Centenary trailed by just 14-12 at halftime but was outscored 27-8 in the second half.
MEN’S GOLF: The Gents finished in eighth place at the Carla Spenkoch Invitational, shooting a 70-over par 922 as the event concluded on Tuesday at The Quarry Golf Course in San Antonio.
Senior Aubrey Snell, a former Parkway High star, was the Gents’ top finisher as he tied for fifth place at 4-over par 217 highlighted by a 2-under par 69 on Tuesday. In two rounds on Monday, Snell shot 72 and 76 on Monday. It was his sixth top-five career finish, giving Snell spots in the top 10 an impressive 11 times as a Gent.
The Gents return to action on Oct. 19-20 in the Texas A&M-Victoria Fall Classic held at The Club at Colony Creek in Victoria.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Ladies (2-6-1, 0-1-1 SCAC) earned a 2-2 tie against the University of Dallas Crusaders last Friday in a conference match on the road.
Centenary was led by freshman Valerie Miranda who continued her remarkable rookie campaign as she scored both of the Ladies’ goals. She now has 10 this season. She recorded her third multi-goal match of the season.
Miranda’s 10 goals are the program’s sixth-most in a single season in the Division III era (2011-present). One more goal will move her into the top five.
Miranda was appropriately named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Her 22 points this season are also Centenary’s sixth-most in a single season in the D3 era. She is already tied for ninth all-time in program history for goals in a career.
The Ladies will visit Concordia University this Friday night at 7:30 in Austin, Texas.
MEN’S SOCCER: The Gents (3-6, 0-3 SCAC) went winless on the road last weekend in league play, falling by identical 2-1 scores to Dallas on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.
The Gents are back home this weekend for a pair of conference matches – on Friday at 5 against Concordia and Sunday at noon against Texas Lutheran.
SWIMMING: The Ladies and Gents open their seasons this weekend at home with a pair of dual meets against McMurry inside the Centenary campus Fitness Center. Friday’s competition will start at 5 o’clock followed by a 10 a.m. meet on Saturday.
