Every month or so I get together for lunch with my father. It’s not a set thing, but it’s become a consistent thing. I try to find a lunch spot in between where he works and my office, and of course, a place I can report on.
Earlier last week I saw a post on Facebook about Marilyn’s Place, 4041 Fern Ave., Shreveport, doing a Memorial walk/run for a customer who had passed away. This immediately made me a fan, and since Marilyn’s falls right between our workplaces, it was a perfect location for lunch.
I will have to admit I had to illegally park on the grass just to be within walking distance, having arrived at 11:40, a good sign for an upcoming meal. It was so nice out that we found a spot outside in the shade to eat.
Lately I have been ordering Boudin Eggrolls everywhere I’ve seen them, so I couldn’t pass on Marilyn’s appetizer. They were stuffed full, fried to a nice golden brown and easily stack up with all the top ones I have tried lately.
I went with the Catfish Po’ Boy, and substituted fries for the chips that normally come with the Po’ Boys. The Po’ Boy was served open-faced. The fresh bread was without a doubt a quality New Orleans-sourced bread. It was stuffed with so much catfish, lettuce, tomato and pickles, I’m not sure it all would fit as a sandwich. It did, but it was big. The veggies were all fresh and the catfish was fried well with some great seasoning in the batter.
My father ordered a Shrimp Po’ Boy, my normal favorite, and he also subbed fries for the chips. It looked as good as any I have had in recent months. I’d like to say how good it was, but it was gone before I had a chance to get a little taste. I’m going out on a limb by saying my dad enjoyed it.
The seasoned fries were very good, the type of crunch on the outside I like and soft inside. The seasoning was just right as well.
At Marilyn’s you order at a counter and they bring your food to you at your table. The person who took my order explained what a travesty it would be if we didn’t finish our meal with some Beignets.
OK, it doesn’t take much arm-twisting for me to order dessert. I was full with the appetizer and meal, but somehow I ate two of the three Beignets, and Dad had the other one. They were good.
I had no regrets being stuffed, and having to go back to work, but a nap would have been better.
