Centenary’s football team got quite a kick out of its first win of the season last Saturday at Austin College.
Sophomore kicker Zane Wyss, a former Captain Shreve Gator, was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. Wyss had a busy and impressive game on Saturday for the Gents in their 37-13 win at Austin College.
He was 4-for-4 on PAT’s and 3-3 on field goals. That kept him perfect on the season on placement kicks.
Wyss also punted four times for an average of 50.3 yards with three landing inside the 20, one touchback, and a long of 59 yards. He made field goals of 41, 23, and 32 yards. The 41-yarder that gave the Gents an early 3-0 lead was a career long.
The Gents picked up their first win of the season last weekend as they recorded a resounding 24-point non-conference victory over Austin College at Jerry E. Apple Stadium in Sherman, Texas.
The Gents improved to 1-3 while the ‘Roos fell to 1-4. The teams will meet again in Shreveport on Oct. 17 at 6 o’clock in a conference game at Atkins Field.
Centenary goes back on the road this weekend to face Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. with kickoff set for 1 on Saturday afternoon.
MEN’S SOCCER: The Gents were edged 2-1 by the University of St. Thomas in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Atkins Field.
The Gents (3-4) struck first with a goal just over a minute into the match to take a 1-0 lead, but the Celts (3-4-1) answered with a pair of goals to secure the road win.
Senior Carter Webb scored at the 43:07 mark off an assist from junior Jesse Lang to give the Maroon and White an early advantage.
Hamilton Estrada tied the match with an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to send the match even into the halftime break. The Celts’ Hani Ahmadie scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute with the assist credited to Ronaldo Guzman.
The Gents have their first conference road match on Friday against the University of Dallas in Irving.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: The Ladies fell 5-2 to St. Thomas in the league opener on Saturday at home.
Centenary (2-6) was only down 3-2 at halftime to the Celts (3-5-2) but allowed two second-half goals.
The Maroon and White took an early 1-0 lead when senior Sarah Crenshaw scored her first goal of the season and was assisted by freshman Valerie Miranda just over 16 minutes into the match.
The rookie Miranda then gave the Ladies a 2-1 lead as she scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season with the assist from former Loyola College Prep star Ainsley Matlock, a sophomore, in the 36th minute.
The Ladies play their first conference road match on Friday against Dallas in Irving.
VOLLEYBALL: The Ladies were swept by the nationally-ranked East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Tuesday in a non-conference contest inside Ornelas Gymnasium in Marshall.
Centenary (1-9) lost for the fifth time in a row and fell to 0-5 on the road this season while the Tigers, ranked No. 13 in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, improved to 12-4 and are now 8-0 at home. ETBU now leads the all-time series 18-1.
The Tigers won the first set 25-9, set two 25-12, and then closed out the sweep in set three, 25-7. Centenary finished with 21 digs, nine kills, nine assists, three solo blocks, and two service aces. ETBU tallied 40 kills, 39 assists, 38 digs, one solo block, and 13 aces.
