A couple of District 1-5A nailbiters, and a surprising one in 1-4A, were among highlights of the local Week 5 high school football slate.
Benton’s Malachi Zeigler found Madden Raymond for the go-ahead touchdown with 29 seconds to go, and added a two-point converstion run to complete a 31-28 comeback. The Yellow Jackets, bolstered by the return of fullback Collin Deare, led 28-14 at the outset of the final quarter.
Deere, in his first game of the season, ran for 178 yards and two scores while Christian Maxie returned from injury to post 134 yards and two more TDs. Benton’s Raymond had 112 receiving yards while Zeigler accounted for 279 yards of total offense.
Airline weathered a two-score comeback in the final five minutes by Natchitoches Central and held off the Chiefs 32-29.
Evangel shut out Captain Shreve 46-0 as Peyton “Pop” Houston piled up 464 total yards, 364 passing, while accounting for five scores, three TD passes to raise his career total to 97. The Eagles held the Gators to their lowest yardage total, 187, in four seasons with running back Gabe Lockett accounting for most of it with 141 yards.
Winless Woodlawn came close to shocking undefeated Minden in a District 1-4A contest. The Crimson Tide needed a fourth-quarter score to rally past the Knights 21-14. Woodlawn scored twice in the third period to take leads.
Huntington (0-5) nearly pulled off a big upset, falling by two at Class 4A power Franklin Parish when the Patriots threw the winning TD pass with 42 seconds to go. Franklin Parish had won at Airline 54-43 a week earlier. The Raiders’ Brylan Washington threw for four touchdowns.
