Suspect Arrested in Killing of 13-Year-Old at Shreveport Apartment Complex

Shreveport police arrested Javieon Abbott on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Shamichael Russell, 13, who was killed Monday night near the basketball court at Olde Salem Village Apartments, 6725 Buncombe Road. Two other children — a 2-year-old and a 17-year-old — were also wounded in the attack. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit, working overnight with assistance from the GATOR Task Force, identified and arrested Abbott within hours of the shooting. Chief Wayne Smith said his team’s “determination to find justice for Shamichael, his family, and the other children who were injured never wavered.” Additional charges are expected.

Woman Arrested for Helping Tre’veon Jackson While He Was a Fugitive

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Mikhala Duncan on a charge of accessory to simple escape after investigators determined she met with escaped inmate Tre’veon Jackson at least twice in Texas while he was a fugitive. CPSO said Duncan acknowledged she knew Jackson had escaped from custody when he contacted her and when she later met with him. On the night of Jackson’s capture in Marshall, Texas on September 22, Duncan had brought their child to meet with him. The investigation into Jackson’s September 14 escape from a Shreveport hospital during medical transport remains ongoing.

Multi-Agency GATOR Task Force Raid on Herndon Avenue Nets Six Firearms, Cocaine, and Counterfeit Cash

A joint search warrant executed Sunday on the 300 block of Herndon Avenue in Shreveport resulted in three arrests and the seizure of six firearms, a suppressor, 30 grams of suspected cocaine, 200 grams of marijuana, and $200 in counterfeit currency. Dallas Hanks and Trey Fontenot were each charged with possession with intent to distribute and illegal carrying of a weapon while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance; Fontenot also had an outstanding city marshal’s warrant. Tina Ly was charged with marijuana possession. The operation involved the Shreveport Police Department’s Violent Crimes Abatement Team, the Shreveport City Marshal’s Office, Louisiana State Police GATOR Task Force, Louisiana Probation and Parole, Caddo Parish Juvenile Services, and the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office.

One Book One Parish Launches Today; Author Shannon Terry Wiley Appears This Afternoon at North Shreveport Branch

Shreve Memorial Library’s 2026 One Book One Parish campaign begins today with the first of four author talks by Shannon Terry Wiley, whose debut novel Yellow September: A Louisiana Love Story of Pestilence and Perseverance chronicles the 1873 yellow fever epidemic that killed more than 1,000 people in Shreveport. Wiley appears today at the North Shreveport Branch, 4844 North Market Street, at 2:00 p.m. Additional author talks are scheduled October 8, 9, and 14 at other branches. Guest lectures by Dr. Gary Joiner (Oct. 5, Broadmoor Branch) and Dr. Cheryl White (Oct. 6, Hamilton/South Caddo Branch) and parish-wide book club discussions through October 30 round out the month. All events are free and open to the public; no registration required.
