It was known as the Brotherton Bowl when brothers Jason and Coy Brotherton led their teams into the annual Haughton-Parkway football collision.

Jason moved into the Haughton school administration as assistant principal three falls ago, but the neighborhood rivalry hasn’t faded. Buccaneer head coach Matthew Sewell is best buds with Parkway coach Brotherton, who of course is a Haughton graduate.

Brotherton was in the stands at Harold E. Harlan Stadium in Haughton last Friday night, after his Panthers scored two late touchdowns to secure a 29-6 District 1-5A win over Huntington a night earlier. He waited until Sewell spoke to his Bucs following their 50-36 district debut victory over Captain Shreve, and then walked the length of the field to congratulate his pal.

This is, as suggested by veteran local scribe Roy Lang III, the “BFF Bowl.”

More pertinent to the young men strapping on shoulder pads and pulling on helmets tonight as the unbeaten Bucs visit the 3-1 Panthers is the 15-mile proximity of the two Bossier Parish schools. It’s a couple miles less for Haughton to travel to tonight’s game site, Preston Crownover Stadium.

Most of all, the squads aim to go 2-0 in district play after tonight.

Tonight’s other local game sends Bossier west to Independence Stadium to meet Southwood, with the winner evening its District 1-4A record at 1-1.
