Soul Bowl matchup Saturday pits rising Lions, Giants in SBJ Top 10

JOURNAL SPORTS

Booker T. Washington and Green Oaks square off Saturday afternoon in the 53rd annual Soul Bowl non-district high school football game, and they’ll meet as unbeatens after two games.

They’ve also earned climbs in the first Shreveport-Bossier Journal Top 10 poll last week, to this edition.

BTW’s impressive 30-16 win at Benton last Friday sold the voters. The Lions roared up to fifth with 28 points, a 25-point rise from “also receiving votes” after Week 1’s win with 3 points.

Green Oaks, which blasted North Webster, picked up 10 points, but only moved up one spot in the poll.

Calvary had a 1-point edge on Loyola in the poll last week but the Cavalliers’ blowout win at Bunkie and Loyola’s last-minute loss at home to Parkway shook up the top five a bit this week. Calvary got all but one first-place vote while the Flyers slipped from second to fourth after their heartbreaker.

Airline held on to its one first-place vote and edged up to second in the poll.

Parkway shot up four spots to third and earned a 23-point climb.

Five veteran sports media members who cover local high school football rank their top 10 teams each week. Rankings started after Week 1 and continue through the end of the regular season.
