Byrd High School’s Christian Maxie had the greatest game by any Shreveport-Bossier running back Thursday night against defending state champion Ouachita.
Maxie, a senior halfback who was already on track to top the Yellow Jackets’ school career rushing record if he posted 1,183 yards this fall, nearly carved that figure in half against the Lions. Now he needs 754 yards to take the school career mark set from 2004-06 by Justan Gibson.
Maxie broke the Shreveport-Bossier single-game rushing yards record by running for 429 yards on 40 carries, but Byrd could not hold off a Ouachita second-half rally in a 44-37 loss in Monroe.
The record performance, which surpassed the old record of 407 by Charles Ball of Byrd in a 1990 game against Huntington, included touchdown runs of 26, 54 and 5 yards. Maxie had a non-scoring 68-yard dash.
The Jackets jumped to a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter but coming down the stretch, the Lions got three straight TD runs (18, 61, 67 yards) by Carter McClinton over a 14-minute stretch to surge into a 44-29 lead. Byrd scored with 1:27 remaining and Maxie added a two-point run but the Jackets couldn’t get the ball back.
McClinton posted 190 rushing yards on 13 carries. Maxie accounted for all but 74 of Byrd’s total of 555 offensive yards and overcame 24 negative yards in his rushing output.
Green Oaks got a pair of defensive touchdowns from Tony Johnson Jr., a fumble return and a pick six, in its surprising rout of visiting Southwood Thursday night.
