Deputy Chief Mike Tyler presented the City of Shreveport’s year-to-date crime statistics to the Shreveport City Council on Monday.
The statistics compared the reporting period from Jan. 1 through July 24 for each year to provide an accurate comparison of crime trends over time.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, the city has experienced reductions in many crime categories, including several violent offenses. However, officials said one of the most concerning trends is the continued increase in fatal traffic crashes.
The City of Shreveport and Caddo Parish currently lead Louisiana in fatal crashes. Officials identified two areas of particular concern:
- Pedestrians being struck while in or near roadways.
- Crashes involving distracted driving.
The department urged drivers to remain alert, put their phones down, obey traffic laws, and watch carefully for pedestrians. Pedestrians were also encouraged to use designated crossings, remain visible, and avoid entering roadways unexpectedly.
According to the department, reducing fatal crashes requires everyone who uses the roadways to make safer decisions.
