Bosser Parish Community College point guard Tony Montgomery was a breakout star at a national junior college basketball showcase event last weekend in Virginia, and that earned him the chance to line up today and Friday at an even more exclusive event.

Montgomery, who will be a sophomore for the Cavaliers next season, had a great showing at the JA48 event in Richmond, Va., last week. The invitation-only camp put on by Juco Advocate featured the top 48 JUCO players going into their sophomore season in the country. Hundreds of coaches from all levels of NCAA Division I took in the action.

He was selected for their JA Champions All-Star roster that is composed of the top 18 players from the camp. He will play in Bryan, Texas today and Friday at the Legends Event Center. The NXTPRO Puma Pro 16 National Finals will also be going on at the same venue, and another big crowd of college coaches looking for 2027 JUCO signees will be on hand.

“Tony has continued to work hard this past spring after the season and this summer to prepare for the opportunity he earned to be on a national stage at these events,” said BPCC coach Jeff Moore. “He has a special skill set  of scoring and delivering the ball to others for easy buckets.

“Stats in our competitive region don’t lie — he led our 12-team Region XIV in scoring and assists as a freshman in a league full of Division 1 signees,” said Moore.

The Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches named Montgomery the state’s JUCO player of the year and he received the honor May 5 at the annual LABC Awards Dinner in Baton Rouge. The award is selected annually by men’s college basketball coaches across the state of Louisiana and recognizes the top junior college player for performance, impact, and leadership.

A 6-foot-1 point guard from Columbus, Georgia, Montgomery delivered a dominant freshman campaign for the Cavaliers. He earned first team All-Region XIV honors — one of only two freshmen named to the first team — while leading the region in both scoring (19.5 points per game) and assists (4.9 per game).

Montgomery was productive across the board for BPCC with averages of 3.9 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game, while shooting 42 percent from the field (202-of-477), 32 percent from three-point range (58-of-182), and 77 percent from the free throw line (139-of-181).

“I have had the pleasure of coaching some great point guards throughout my career from Louisiana — Jalan West (Bossier HS/Northwestern State), Shamir Davis (Huntington HS/Northwestern State), Ronnie Ross (Jeanerette HS/John Wood CC/Utah State), and Jordan Wright (Dunham HS/LSU),” said the coach. “Tony has the same talent level. We are looking forward to his maturity and growth as a leader helping lead our team next season.”
