Shreveport Police officers rescued a paraplegic woman from a barricaded suspect situation late Thursday night after responding to reports of a man attempting to set a house on fire.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 11 p.m. and discovered the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence while armed with a rifle.
During the response, officers learned a paraplegic woman was trapped inside the home, prompting what authorities described as an urgent rescue effort.
Police said the suspect threatened to shoot officers if they attempted to enter the residence. Patrol officers, crisis negotiators, and members of the department’s Special Response Team coordinated efforts while negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Just after midnight, the Special Response Team used the department’s armored BearCat rescue vehicle to breach the front door and enter the home. Officers then carried the trapped woman out of the residence to safety.
Inside the home, officers located the suspect, who authorities said had inflicted serious injuries upon himself using a large bladed weapon believed to be similar to a machete.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Officials confirmed the woman was safely rescued during the operation.
The Shreveport Fire Department also responded to assist in treating both the victim and the suspect.
Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
