Buoyed by a pair of encouraging wins, Jeff Moore’s first Bossier Parish Community College basketball team wraps up the season in the Region XIV Conference Tournament beginning tonight in Baytown, Texas.
BPCC will face Angelina College in a first-round contest at 8 p.m. on the campus of Lee College.
The Cavaliers closed the regular season Saturday with a long, happy bus ride home from south Texas following an impressive 97-88 comeback victory at Coastal Bend College, fueled by balanced scoring and strong late-game execution.
Freshman guard Tony Montgomery had a dynamic outing with 29 points, 12 assists, six rebounds, and three steals. Freshman guard Zequan Lewis added 26 points and five rebounds, while freshman forward Drew Cooper contributed 25 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
The Cavaliers battled through a slow start but stayed within striking distance. BPCC (11-19) kicked into gear down the stretch to prevail.
“We played very sluggish in the first half but kept fighting to stay in the game going into halftime down three,” said Moore, who has developed a roster with 11 freshmen among the 15 players. “Great job by our whole team stepping up the last six minutes of the game to get a lead by making plays and getting stops to finish with a road win at one of the toughest places to win in our league.”
It came on the heels of a Feb. 25 homecourt win over Lamar State-Port Arthur, 90-77, and a highly competitive loss to powerful Blinn College three days later. A disappointing outing at Lee March 4 didn’t linger as the Cavs bounced back to score the encouraging win at Coastal Bend.
The matchup with Angelina is a major challenge, since the Roadrunners beat the Cavs 62-33 in Lufkin on Feb. 21 as BPCC had a miserable shooting day, making just 28 percent from the floor and going 5 of 29 on 3-pointers.
