Wednesday night’s postgame high school soccer brawl at Bossier High School’s Memorial Stadium has resulted in a Morgan City player going to jail and a suspension of a Bearkats’ player for the team’s state quarterfinal game in Baton Rouge next week.
The Bossier Parish Sheriff’s office announced Thursday afternoon that St. Mary’s Parish authorities jailed Morgan City senior goalkeeper Micah Wilkerson on a $10,000 bond for second degree battery. Bossier Parish deputies will “take custody of Mr. Wilkerson to face his charges in Bossier Parish,” the press release said.
Wilkerson was the central figure in the wild but relatively brief scene that unfolded moments after the conclusion of Bossier’s 1-0 victory in a second-round playoff game. Video showed him throwing punches, one that knocked Bossier junior Leonardo Villarreal to the ground, briefly unconscious.
Wilkerson was one of three Morgan City players assessed red cards and mandatory one-game suspensions by game officials, ratified Thursday by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Wilkerson, listed as 6-foot-2, 195 pounds on Morgan City’s football roster, was a standout for the Tigers in that sport and on the baseball team, but reportedly has been removed from the baseball squad by school officials.
Bossier had one player suspended. Wilson Alvardo will not compete in the next playoff game, early next week in Baton Rouge against top-seeded University High. Alvardo was apparently the first in the altercation to throw a punch, which appeared to be directed toward Wilkerson, but did not apparently connect.
