First-year coaches J.A. Anglin at Centenary and Bossier Parish Community College’s Jeff Moore are all smiles after weekend wins for their men’s basketball teams, while the LSUS women continued their dominance of the Red River Athletic Conference.
Anglin’s Gents stretched their winning streak to five and clinched a berth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a pair of road wins at Hendrix (74-51) and University of the Ozarks (62-60).
Moore’s Cavaliers snapped a losing skid in convincing style, smacking visiting Coastal Bend 78-66 Saturday afternoon in Billy Montgomery Gym.
The LSUS women rose to 21-2 overall and 17-0 in the RRAC by rolling on the road at Hobbs, N.M., over University of the Southwest on Saturday afternoon. The Pilots have lost only one RRAC game in two seasons under coach Tim Hays.
Katie Ambrose scored 23 points to lead the LSUS rout. The men, also on top in the RRAC, did not play Saturday.
Both LSUS teams are on the road tonight for games at Texas College.
Drew Cooper and Zequan Lewis each scored 20 for Bossier Parish in Saturday’s win, while Tony Montgomery added 13 and 10 came from Dustin Welch. Montgomery issued nine assists and made four steals. Cooper grabbed 12 rebounds while Lewis hit 5 of 7 on 3-pointers.
“Really proud of our team for that performance and effort,” said Moore. “They have continued to work every day through a tough stretch and were able to put together a solid 40-minute game. We shared the ball, rebounded well and limited mistakes to get the win.
“We’ll need to be at our best this week going to play at two top 20 ranked teams, Kilgore College and Trinity Valley Community College,” said Moore.
The Gents are home this weekend for rematches with Hendrix and Ozarks.
