The Bossier Parish Community College basketball team has had near misses and frustrations in Region IX competition. Thursday at home, the Cavaliers fell by two in overtime but got inspiration from the opposing coach.
BPCC first-year coach Jeff Moore honored his junior college coach, Tyler JC’s Mike Marquis, on the night the Cavaliers staged their NABC Coaches Vs. Cancer – Suits & Sneakers Game. Marquis is battling throat cancer. Moore was an assistant at Tyler JC for Marquis early in his coaching career.
“It was a special night, despite the loss,” said Moore, who spotlighted Marquis to his young team (11 freshmen) before tipoff. “The game down to who had the ball last. I was super proud of our fight and toughness against Coach Marquis, who has always embodied those characteristics.”
Tony Montgomery poured in 31 points for the Cavs in the 92-90 defeat and Drew Cooper added 26. The Cavaliers also honored their family members at the game.
Saturday on the road, BPCC fell 89-70 at Navarro JC despite 24 points by Montgomery and 20 from Zaquan Lewis. The Cavaliers (8-11, 2-9) face a tough challenge when they play a makeup game tonight at Blinn JC.
LSUS MEN HOLD OFF LSUA: LSU Shreveport’s 15th-ranked Pilots picked up a hard-fought 89–80 win over LSU Alexandria on Saturday afternoon at The Dock as James Johnson scored 19 and Hayden Brittingham added 18 points and 9 rebounds.
The Pilots improved to 17-4 overall and a league-best 14-1 in Red River Athletic Conference play, while LSUA slipped to 15-7 overall and 12-4 in the RRAC.
Emareyon McDonald filled the stat sheet with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Thaddeus Johnson matched him with 16 points, adding four assists and two steals. Khi Wallace contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
The RRAC weekend began in a big way for the Pilots in a 102-65 victory over Louisiana Christian University Thursday night as Johnson led the way with 20 points.
Tuesday, LSUS goes to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico.
LSUS WOMEN STILL PERFECT IN RRAC: LSU Shreveport’s steady offense and stifling defense earned a 78–54 win Saturday afternoon over LSU Alexandria at The Dock.
LSUS (19-2 overall, 15-0 RRAC) led 19-12 after the first period and 39-25 at halftime over LSUA (9-12, 8-8).
LSUS’ Selma Markisic led all scorers with 23 points. Toni Coleman delivered a strong all-around performance with 15 points, five steals, four assists, and three rebounds. Sami Slusarek pitched in with 12 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists, while Katie Ambrose added 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
Thursday night at the Dock, Markisic poured in 28 in a 73-32 rout of LCU.
The Pilots play again Thursday when they travel to face UNT Dallas.
