The Centenary football team will finish its regular season at home on Saturday evening as the Gents host the Austin College ‘Roos in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game set for 6 o’clock at Atkins Field.

The Gents (1-6, 1-3 SCAC) will honor their senior class and the cheer team seniors in a pregame ceremony at 5:30. Gates will open at 5.

“Senior Day is a special occasion and a new tradition for our program,” said head coach Byron Dawson, near the end of his second official season restarting a program dormant for more than a half-century.

“As we celebrate our seniors, we must stay locked in on the task at hand. We need to bring our A-game. Saturday night, we’ll face a disciplined Austin team, and we’re counting on the Centenary faithful to show up and cheer loud for all 60 minutes.”

Centenary could not keep pace with the Hendrix College Warriors last Saturday night as the Gents fell 64-10. Austin College (1-6, 0-4 SCAC) lost at home last weekend to Lyon, 40-28.

The Gents and ‘Roos are meeting for the second time this season. Austin College recorded a 41-15 win over Centenary on Oct. 4 in Sherman, Texas.

That first matchup was not considered a conference game. Centenary swept the season series over Austin College last season, 36-17 in Sherman, and 41-21 in Shreveport.

The Gents are averaging 367.3 yards of total offense per game – 257.9 passing and 109.4 rushing and average 18.3 points per game.

Centenary has lost its top two quarterbacks to injuries – Vance Feuerbacher and Zin’Tavious Smith – and true freshman Abram Wardell from Calvary Baptist sat out last week’s game with a concussion. Another freshman, Brock Hamilton, played QB last Saturday at Hendrix.

Following the regular-season finale, the Gents and ‘Roos will head to Little Rock, next Saturday for championship weekend held at War Memorial Stadium.

The day will begin with the SCAC’s No. 5 team versus the No. 6 seed at 10 a.m., the No. 3 seed versus the No. 4 seed (3 p.m.), and the top two seeds playing each other at 8 p.m.

TLU, Hendrix, and McMurry have all clinched top three seeds no matter what happens in their games this weekend. Lyon, Centenary, and Austin College will be the 4-6 seeds. The Gents can clinch the No. 4 seed with a win.
