The History Center in the Bossier Central Library Complex presents a special program with Dr. Cheryl White, Hubert Humphries Endowed Professor of History at LSU-S, “Mary Cane: A Founding Mother of Shreveport (And ‘Grandmother’ of Bossier City,” on Wednesday, July 16 at 6pm.
Dr. White is the author of several books on local history and also holds the Yancey Strain Endowed Curatorship of the Spring Street Museum in downtown Shreveport.
Mary Bennett Cane was born in New Hampshire and arrived in the pine forests of what later became Shreveport in the 1830’s. Mary’s husband William Bennett established a trading post in 1832 at the northwest corner of Commerce and Shreve Square, which became the Shreve Town trading company in 1836. Mary herself became a businesswoman and landowner, and her Elysian Grove Plantation on the eastern bank of the Red River formed the earliest lots of the City of Bossier City.
