The Bossier Parish Police Jury is proud to observe National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) from April 21 to April 25. This week highlights the critical importance of safety in work zones for both drivers and roadway workers.
This year’s theme, “Respect the zone so we all go home,” serves as a powerful reminder of the responsibility each motorist carries in ensuring safety while traveling through work zones. The annual campaign aims to raise public awareness about the significant impact individuals have in protecting themselves and the workers dedicated to improving our transportation infrastructure.
NWZAW events for the week are as follows.
• Wednesday, April 23: Go Orange Day: All roadway safety professionals across the country are encouraged to wear orange to show their support for work zone safety. NWZAW and Go Orange Day hold special significance for the families of victims who have lost their lives in work zones.
• Thursday, April 24: Social Media Storm Day: Organizations, companies, institutions, and individuals are urged to share messages and use hashtags #NWZAW and #WorkZoneSafety on social media between 9am and 4pm ET.
• Friday, April 25: Moment of Silence Day: Participate in a Moment of Silence to honor those who lost their lives in work zone incidents. This tribute, started in 2022, invites companies and families to join in remembering these individuals.
In 2023, the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse reported 898 work zone-related fatalities nationwide, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures and active participation in work zone safety advocacy. The DOTD has established a safety memorial in front of its headquarters to honor those who have lost their lives in work zones, including the 14 lives lost in Louisiana work zones in 2023.
