Centenary golfers from Airline, Parkway and Haughton set the pace for the Gents and Ladies in the West Region Invitational wrapping up Tuesday in Georgetown, Texas at Berry Creek Country Club.
Haughton freshman Haylee Crowder topped the Ladies’ scorecard, tying for 15th individually with a 169 (85-84), 25 over par.
The Ladies, who shot a 79-over par 367 on Monday, did not record a team score as sophomore Mya Thompson had to withdraw from Tuesday’s final round.
Trinity won the team title after shooting a 35-over par 611 (305-306).
Centenary freshman Amber Shaw finished 20th at 32-over 176 (92-84) and sophomore Jordyn Templeton shot a 49-over 193 (98-95).
The Gents finished fifth, posting a 67-over par 931 for the tournament.
The Gents, who shot a 44-over par 620 on Monday in the first two rounds and were tied for fifth, shot a 23-over 311 in Tuesday’s final round. LeTourneau won the team title after shooting a 5-over par 869 (288-284-297).
Sophomore Aubrey Snell, a former Parkway star, and senior Andrew Bennett, who prepped at Airline, each tied for 25th place to lead the way for the Gents, shooting 13-over par 229.
Snell shot rounds of 78-76-75 while Bennett carded rounds of 81-73-75. Freshman Ryder Briggs, a Northwood product, finished 32nd at 20-over 236.
Next for the Centenary golfers is the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships April 13-15 at White Bluff Golf Resort in Whitney, Texas.
SOFTBALL: The Ladies were swept by the nationally-ranked Belhaven Blazers in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-1, 3-0 at the Centenary Softball Complex.
The Ladies (14-13) had their season-high eight-game winning streak snapped by the Blazers (22-6) who entered the day ranked 12th in the current NFCA/GoRout Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll. Centenary is now 7-7 at home this season.
Centenary will resume conference play at home this weekend against Austin College (2-26, 2-16 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference). The Ladies were picked to finish seventh this season in the SCAC preseason coaches’ poll this season and are currently sixth in the league standings.
The Ladies began play on Tuesday riding a season-high eight game winning streak after recording a road sweep over the University of Dallas Crusaders in conference play this past weekend in Irving, Texas. Centenary, now 9-8 in league play, won 6-2 on Sunday after sweeping on Saturday, winning 3-0 and 9-1 in five innings.
Senior Anna Scarbrock was one of the catalysts for the Ladies’ success last week and she was appropriately named the SCAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. She did not allow an earned run in 14 innings as she tossed a pair of complete games against LeTourneau and Dallas.
Scarbrock, who now has five complete games this season, allowed one unearned run and seven hits in the two starts with no walks and four strikeouts.
BASEBALL: The Diamond Gents clinched a series win over the Ozarks Eagles on Sunday afternoon with a 9-2 victory in the rubber game of an SCAC series at Shehee Stadium.
Centenary (11-16, 7-11 SCAC) and Eagles (8-15, 4-14) split a doubleheader on Saturday, with Centenary winning 6-5 and falling 9-6 in the nightcap.
The Maroon and White face an uphill climb to get into next month’s SCAC Tournament in Round Rock, Texas. They sit in seventh place in the league standings with 12 contests left. The Diamond Gents will play three teams ahead of them in the chase, beginning with the Southwestern Pirates this weekend in Georgetown, Texas.
The SCAC Tournament will be held May 2-4 at Dell Diamond Park in Round Rock, Texas and features the top four teams in the conference standings.
LACROSSE: The Gents fell 23-9 to the Kalamazoo College Hornets last Friday evening on a rain-soaked Atkins Field.
The Gents (4-6) were playing at home for just the second time this season after falling 20-13 to Point University on March 12. The Hornets snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 5-2. Centenary’s next game, originally scheduled for tonight, has been moved to next Wednesday, April 9 against ETBU at home at 7 p.m.
