Shreveport Fire responds to hazmat spill following multi-vehicle accident

The Shreveport Fire Department (SFD) responded to a serious motor vehicle accident (MVA) involving two 18-wheelers early this morning, which resulted in a hazardous materials spill on a major roadway. The incident was on I-20 west bound just west of the W. Bert Kouns exit.

At approximately 5:55am, Shreveport emergency dispatch received reports of a collision between two 18-wheelers, one of which was leaking diesel fuel following a significant rupture to its fuel tank. The Shreveport Fire Department was immediately dispatched to the scene, and crews arrived at 6:03am to begin efforts to contain the spill and prevent further environmental contamination.

Upon arrival, crews found one of the 18-wheelers had suffered a large gash in its diesel fuel tank, releasing a substantial amount of fuel onto the median. SFD teams quickly began implementing containment measures to prevent the spill from spreading and posing further risks to the environment and public safety.

Due to the nature of the spill, the Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) were notified and arrived to assist the Shreveport Fire Department in containing and managing the hazardous materials.

The incident prompted temporary lane closures while the spill was contained and the scene was secured. Shreveport Fire Department crews remain on the scene to ensure the safe cleanup of the affected area.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Shreveport Fire Department reminds all drivers to exercise caution on the roadways, and to report any incidents involving spills immediately to emergency services.
