For the second year in a row, the Byrd Yellow Jackets opened their season on the road, but this time they went home with a win.
Byrd running backs Christian Maxey and Quinton Hilliard both rushed for more than 100 yards as the Yellow Jackets defeated St. Amant 26-10.
Maxey rushed for 154 yards and Hilliard ran for 114 yards and scored two touchdowns – one from 58 yards and the other from 5 yards out. Quarterback Harrison Ayers capped the scoring with a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Place kicker Asher Murray kicked a pair of field goals in the second quarter to break a scoreless tie.
The Yellow Jackets finished with 386 yards rushing despite a wet night in south Louisiana, while St. Amant had success in the air. The Gators finished with 204 passing yards but only 70 yards on the ground. The Yellow Jackets came up with three interceptions and recovered a fumble.
Green Oaks 24, Woodlawn 14: After several prognosticators speculated that Class 2A Green Oaks would lose its season-opener to Class 4A Woodlawn, the Giants went out Friday night and made a statement. The Giants forced six fumbles, recovering five, to help take down Woodlawn.
Junior running back Stredtravious Brisker scored two touchdowns and wide receiver Javontaye Dean caught one for the Giants.
“Our defense really stood out,” said Green Oaks coach James Bradford Jr. “I’m really proud of the way they played.”
Woodlawn got one touchdown from running back Quinton Wilson and a touchdown and a 2-point conversion from quarterback M’Kyle Armstrong but coach Thedrick Harris was dismayed over his team’s mistake-filled play.
“We’ve got to go back to the drawing board,” Harris said. “We’ve got to look at a lot of things.”
Booker T. Washington 52, Lakeview 0: Sophomore Aaron Dillard scored two rushing touchdowns and freshman Lathan Brown scored two more as the Lions routed the Lakeview Gators.
Dakerion Mitchell caught a touchdown pass from Damion O’neal and Devion Stewart caught another. Montrevion Chatman added a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
“It was really great that our older guys took care of business and allowed our young pups an opportunity to play under the lights,” said BTW coach Gary Cooper. “We saw a lot of bright spots with our young guys. I’m super proud of this team tonight.”
West Monroe 40, Huntington 7: There wasn’t a capacity crowd at Don Shows Field and there was plenty of grumbling all week after the Rebels dropped a Bayou Jamb contest last weekend to Evangel and its dynamic quarterback, Pop Houston.
West Monroe made amends Friday night, overwhelming the visiting Raiders, taking control quickly.
Huntington will try to bounce back when it opens District 1-5A play against Captain Shreve.
Glenbrook 58, Magnolia Charter 6: The visiting Apaches looked primed for another deep playoff run Friday night as they dominated Magnolia. Next Friday Magnolia goes to Grambling to meet Lincoln Prep.
