Seatbelt checkpoint in Southwest Shreveport

The Shreveport Police Department has announced plans for a Seatbelt Checkpoint in the southwest region of the city on March 1, 2024. Scheduled to run from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the initiative aims to enforce Louisiana’s occupant protection laws and enhance overall traffic safety.

Chief Wayne Smith emphasized that while the primary objective is to enforce seatbelt laws, officers will also be vigilant in identifying any violations of traffic laws for the safety of both motorists and pedestrians. The initiative aligns with the department’s commitment to reducing fatalities and severe injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents.

Research consistently underscores the importance of proper seatbelt usage in minimizing harm during collisions. By conducting this checkpoint, the Shreveport Police Department aims to raise awareness and promote compliance with traffic laws, thereby creating a safer environment for everyone on the road.

Funding for the checkpoint is made possible through the support of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission’s highway safety grant, highlighting the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and state agencies to enhance traffic safety within the community.

The Shreveport Police Department urges all motorists to comply with traffic laws, including the proper use of seatbelts, not only during this checkpoint but at all times. Together, they believe they can make significant strides in creating a safer road environment for everyone.
