Top teams in District 1-5A hold serve

The leaders in District 1-5A basketball took care of business again Tuesday night. 

Southwood and Captain Shreve remained atop the boys standings with lopsided wins. 

Defending girls’ state champion Parkway easily extended its district unbeaten streak while Haughton also stayed perfect in 1-5A competition.

Southwood’s boys defeated Haughton 75-37 as Jeremiah Evans had another big night with 19 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Andrew Bowman added 17 points and Kamauri Fleming 10 points.  

Captain Shreve remained tied with Southwood at the top of District 1-5A with a big second half in defeating Benton 54-33 at home. EJ McDonald led a balanced Gators offense with 13 points, and younger brother JD McDonald added 12 points. Trey Smith topped Benton with 10 points.   

Shreve is now 16-3 overall, 3-0 in 1-5A. Southwood stands 13-4, 3-0, followed by Natchitoches Central (16-3, 2-1), Airline (12-9, 2-1), Parkway (12-7, 1-2), Benton (9-11, 1-2), Haughton (9-13, 0-3) and Byrd (3-13, 0-3).  

Airline outlasted Parkway 61-59 in overtime as Kevin White tallied 23 points to lead all scorers.   

A pair of non-district games between 1-4A squads had a pair of one-point outcomes. Booker T. Washington slipped past Huntington 61-60 at the Lions Den and Northwood defeated Woodlawn 39-38 at the Falcons Nest.   

LaDarrius Frierson topped all scorers for BTW with 23 points and Colossian Mason Jones had 12 for the Lions. Jacob Stewart scored 16 to lead Huntington, while Antonio Dixon had 14 and Peyton Parker 12.  

Ruston, a Division I Non-Select semifinalist last season, came to Shreveport and came away with a hard-earned 69-61 win at Calvary. Rondae Hill had 24 points for the Cavs (16-5), as Tyrone Jamison contributed 15 points and Bubba Strong 10.  

On the girls side, Parkway and Haughton continued to roll in 1-5A while Natchitoches Central and Benton won to remain tied for third.  

Haughton (21-3, 5-0) beat Southwood (17-6, 1-4) 60-38 with Skylar Branch leading three Lady Bucs in double-digits scoring 19. Shaniya Perkins had 16 and Bella Hammond 15. Southwood was led by Kenya Anderson’s 19 points.  

The Lady Panthers (17-6, 5-0) topped Airline (14-8, 2-3) 56-15 as Chloe Larry scored 16, Haughton transfer Dakota Howard 12 and Savanah Wilson 10.    

Benton (14-10, 3-2) took out Captain Shreve (8-9, 1-4) 55-39 as Kryshna Bostic scored 17 points with five 3-point baskets. Avery Ryan added 11 points for the Lady Tigers.  

Huntington (18-5) had little trouble taking down BTW 78-28 behind the 17 points of Carley Hamilton, Zanyah Lefear dropped in 14 and Kyndal Graham 13. BTW (8-11) got 16 points from Lakaira Harris.
