Judge rules former School Board member ineligible in residency dispute

A recent court ruling in Caddo District Court has found Barbara Smith-Iverson, a former member of the Caddo Parish School Board, ineligible to seek election due to residency issues. The ruling, made by Judge Brady O’Callaghan, confirmed that Smith-Iverson did not meet the state’s residency requirements for the district she aimed to represent.

This wasn’t the first time Smith-Iverson faced such a challenge. In June, it was revealed that she resided in a Bossier City apartment complex, violating the state’s residency laws mandating elected officials to maintain domicile in the district they represent. Consequently, she was removed from office, leading Darrin Dixon to step in for an interim term.

Despite attempts to qualify once more for the District 7 seat, Smith-Iverson’s candidacy faced opposition from Dixon. His attorney, Louisiana State Representative Alan Seabaugh, highlighted the necessity for candidates to have a one-year residency within the district before qualifying. Smith-Iverson’s failure to meet this requirement led to her disqualification from the upcoming election.

During the recent court proceedings, Smith-Iverson was notably absent, leading to O’Callaghan’s swift decision in favor of Dixon. With Smith-Iverson disqualified, Dixon is set to return unopposed to the District 7 seat, marking the conclusion of a legal battle that ensured compliance with residency prerequisites for candidacy.

Dixon expressed relief at the ruling, emphasizing the need to focus on the responsibilities towards the children of Caddo Parish. His return to the board without opposition is a culmination of legal efforts to uphold the residency requirements integral to candidacy for the school board.

Smith-Iverson’s attempts to reenter the race despite residency discrepancies highlight the criticality of abiding by legal requirements for electoral candidacy. The ruling reaffirms the importance of upholding residency mandates, ensuring fair and compliant representation within the district.
