Fire at Clift and W. 68th on Christmas

Responding to a reported apartment fire on Clift at West 68th during Christmas Evening, SFD and Signal 51 swiftly reacted. Rescue 9, arriving first, noted a fully involved apartment fire upon scene evaluation.

Engaging in fire attack alongside Rescue 9’s crew, Engine 15 reached the scene, containing the fire that had extended to the 2nd floor, promptly bringing it under control.

Notably, all four apartments within the building appeared unoccupied; among them, three suffered substantial damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

As winter embraces us, ensure warmth and safety by following these essential guidelines:

  • Maintain a three-foot (one meter) clearance around heating appliances, such as furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, or portable space heaters to prevent potential fires.

  • Establish a “kid-free zone” of three feet (one meter) around open fires and space heaters to safeguard children from accidental burns.

  • Avoid using your oven as a heating source for your home.

  • Employ qualified professionals for the installation of stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, or central heating systems, adhering to local codes and manufacturer’s guidelines.

  • Schedule annual cleaning and inspection of heating equipment and chimneys by certified professionals to ensure safe operation.

  • Remember to turn off portable heaters when not in use or before bedtime.

  • Utilize the specific fuel type recommended by the manufacturer for fuel-burning space heaters.

  • Install sturdy screens for fireplaces to prevent sparks from dispersing into the room. Dispose of ashes in a metal container once cooled, keeping it at a safe distance from your residence.

  • Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure their functionality and your family’s safety.
