Cutting-edge technology that feels straight out of science fiction and comic book hero tales is now a reality in the operating rooms at Willis-Knighton Health System. They’ve brought in the HipInsight™ System, the pioneering FDA-approved augmented reality (AR) guidance platform for joint replacement, making them the first health system in Northwest Louisiana to offer this innovative solution.
Vik Chatrath, MD, from WK Bossier Orthopedics, stands among the select 40 surgeons nationwide equipped to perform total hip replacement surgeries using the groundbreaking HipInsight technology. He conducts these transformative surgeries at the WK Bossier Health Center.
Dr. Chatrath expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “While hip replacement surgery is already highly successful, I continuously seek ways to enhance patient outcomes. Introducing HipInsight is exciting because it promises smaller incisions, reduced pain and blood loss, and faster recovery for my patients.”
The HipInsight™ System operates by displaying real-time 3D models of a patient’s anatomy, implants, and surgical instruments within the body using Microsoft HoloLens 2 augmented reality glasses, effectively granting surgeons a form of X-ray vision. Surgeons synchronize physical tools with their virtual counterparts to ensure precise implant orientation. This alignment is so exact that when doctors operate on the holographic representation, they’re effectively operating on the real joint.
Dr. Chatrath highlighted the contrast, stating, “Traditionally, surgeons rely on two-dimensional X-rays and external workstations or screens outside the surgical field. HipInsight simplifies this process, allowing surgeons to concentrate on the patient without constantly shifting attention to computer screens. They access the necessary visuals precisely when required, following the surgery sequence.”
Total hip replacement surgeries are common, with nearly 450,000 procedures performed annually in the United States.
