Second-half shutdown dooms Knights at Minden

MINDEN – It was not the night the Woodlawn Knights wanted, but it was the night the Minden Crimson Tide had looked for all season long.

Jakobe Jackson and Dunovan Robinson combined to score five rushing touchdowns for the Crimson Tide in a surprising 36-6 romp, handing head coach Spencer Heard his 64th win and making him the winningest coach in Minden’s long history. It probably sent the Tide into the playoffs and put the Knights’ hopes in jeopardy.

The Knights (4-6, 2-5 in 1-4A) stayed close through the first half trailing only 14-6.  But their offense was held to just 160 yards and had just one first down — on a penalty — in the second half.

Robinson led the Minden (3-7, 3-4) ground game with 133 yards on 21 carries and two scores while Jackson added 92 yards and three scores.

The Knights’ Isaiah Kennedy got their only score on a 2-yard plunge to cut the lead to 8-6 with just under five minutes left in the first half. Kennedy led Woodlawn with 30 yards on seven carries and passed for 74 yards hitting 9-of-19 tosses.

The Knights will have to wait until Sunday when the playoff brackets are released to see if they don’t fall too far from their No. 20 ranking in Select Division II. The top 24 teams make the playoffs in Select.

Minden was ranked 28 in Non-Select Division II and needed a win to be among the top 28 teams to make that bracket.
