Evangel routs BTW to finish regular season with momentum; Titans outscored

After losing two of its last three games, Evangel wanted to build a little momentum headed into the playoffs.

The Eagles did just that Friday as they dumped 35 first-half points on BTW and sprinted to a 42-6 win.

Evangel (6-4, 5-2 District 1-4A) scored 28 of those points in the first quarter as the Eagles created early separation.

Entering the final week at No. 12 in the Division II Select playoff bracket, the Eagles will return to Rodney Duron Field for the first round of the playoffs.

Parker Fulgham entered Week 10 as the state’s leading receiver with 1,080 yards, according to geauxpreps.com

BTW (3-7, 1-5) ends its regular season losing six of its last seven games as the Lions scored eight or fewer points in five of those losses.

BTW entered the week sitting on the bubble at No. 24 in the Division II Select playoffs, but the Lions did have a more than one point lead in the power rankings over the next closest team.

Fortunately for the Lions, the three closest teams also lost, which should secure BTW a playoff spot.

D’Arbonne Woods 42, North Caddo 36: The Titans nearly pulled off a monumental upset in Vivian as North Caddo rallied from two scores down and led by two points with 1:30 left in the game.

But the Timberwolves (8-1, 4-1) punched in a late score and intercepted a North Caddo Hail Mary pass to escape with a road win.

A victory would have put the Titans (2-8, 1-4) back into the playoff hunt as North Caddo entered the final regular season week at No. 28 needing to vault up to No. 24 in the Division III Select Playoff bracket.

North Caddo coach Chase Thompson said his defense rose to the occasion to complement quarterback Mason Jackson’s best passing game of the season.

“Our defense stepped up huge in the second half,” said Thompson, whose Titans trailed 21-6 at the half. “We got a couple of fourth-down stops that really changed the momentum.

“Mason had an outstanding game, and our receivers Antonio Moore, Chancellor Washington and Braylon Champagne had stellar nights catching the ball. We took the roof off their defense with some big passes, and that really opened up our running game.”

A young Titans squad that’s graduating just five total starters steadily improved throughout the season, and Thompson believes his group will carry that momentum into next season.

“We were a young team this year, and we feel like next year will be a massive year for us.”
