Airline tops SBJ poll, Calvary picks up votes

JOURNAL STAFF

Airline held on to the top spot in this week’s Shreveport-Bossier Journal Top 10 local football poll, but Calvary took a couple of the Vikes’ first-place votes after its impressive win.

The Vikings ran their record to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in District 1-5A after a 41-21 road win at Natchitoches Central.  It was the first time this season Airline was held to less than 48 points.

The Cavaliers, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, defeated Class 4A No. 4 Westgate 32-22 to stay unbeaten at 5-0.  Calvary took a 17-3 lead into halftime and used a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown by Julius Moss to stave off the Tigers.

Captain Shreve moved up a couple spots after defeating previous No. 3 Parkway 28-15 in a District 1-5A game. With the loss the previously undefeated Panthers slipped to No. 5. Evangel remained at No. 4 following its 41-22 win over Woodlawn. Haughton kept its No. 6 spot with a 46-28 win over Southwood.

Huntington moved up one slot to No. 7 after defeating Minden 32-16 and Northwood jumped a couple spots to No. 8 after a 41-0 rout of Bossier. Byrd picked up its first win on the season, 61-35 over Benton and re-entered the poll at No. 9. Woodlawn’s loss to Evangel dropped it three spots to No. 10.
