The top-ranked and third ranked teams in Class 2A along with four ranked squads in Class 4A are involved among the local games on this week’s schedule, Week 3 of the LHSAA football season.

Calvary Baptist, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A, will take on another Class 5A opponent this Thursday when it visits Independence Stadium to face Byrd.

The Cavaliers (2-0) last defeated the Yellow Jackets (0-2) in 2019 on their way to a 10-0 regular season and state quarterfinalist.

Benton (1-1) hopes to get back on track when it hosts the No. 3 team Class 2A, Newman (2-0) from New Orleans. The Greenies defeated Class 5A Hahnville the first week of the season. Last season, Newman – led by senior quarterback Arch Manning — rallied from 18 points down at halftime and claimed a 54-52 showdown with Benton in the Crescent City.

Evangel (1-1), the 10th-ranked team in Class 4A, will travel to play No. 5 Westgate (2-0). The Tigers fell in last year’s playoffs in the semifinals of Non-Select Division I to eventual state champion Destrehan. Westgate won last year’s game with the Eagles, 37-21, played at Bossier’s Memorial Stadium due to renovations at Rodney Duron Field.

North DeSoto (1-1), the No. 6 team in 4A, will play Loyola (0-2) at Messmer Stadium.

Undefeated Huntington (2-0) is on the road to Monroe to face Neville (2-0) the No. 4 ranked team in 4A.

Saturday’s game will not have a ranked team but is always one of the most anticipated game of the season, the “Soul Bowl” between Booker T. Washington (1-1) and Green Oaks (1-1). The game is set for 5 p.m. on the newly-turfed Leonard C. Barnes Stadium on the BTW campus.
