Captain Shreve and Byrd of Class 5A will be host to lower classification teams Thursday night but that doesn’t mean the lower-class schools won’t have a fighting chance and the two games should be among the most interesting of the second week games.
Shreve will face Class 2A’s statewide top-ranked team, Calvary Baptist, at Independence Stadium. Both are 1-0 after the Gators set school rushing records while dumping Loyola, also a 2A squad, 37-7. The Cavaliers rolled up almost 700 yards in a 47-12 rout of Class A power Logansport on the road.
Byrd (0-1) will try to rebound after falling on the road to Texas stalwart Pleasant Grove of Texarkana, 27-10.The Yellow Jackets host Huntington (1-0) a 38-26 winner over Mansfield, in a game at Jerry Burton Stadium.
Highlighting the Friday slate of games will be undefeated local teams going on the road to play out-of-the-area unbeaten teams.
Airline (1-0) will travel to Farmerville to play Class 3A powerhouse Union Parish (1-0). Both teams staged come-from-behind wins with the Vikings taking down North DeSoto 53-42 and the Farmers overcoming Homer 28-21.
Benton (1-0) will travel to Texarkana to play Texas High (2-0). The Tigers held off a two-conversion from Northwood to get the 28-26 win. Texas High has had a pair of high-scoring wins, beating Lone Star (Frisco, Texas) 41-37 and Colleyville Heritage 41-38.
