Byrd football kicks off season out-of-state, then travels only twice more

By LEE HILLER, Journal Sports

C.E. Byrd embarks on its 98th football season with the 2023 season kicking off on the road this fall at Pleasant Grove of Texarkana, Texas, and then stays close to its Line Avenue campus.

The Yellow Jackets have played many out-of-town teams over the years, but last year was the first they started a season with an out-of-state opponent since 1947 when they played Corpus Christi, Texas. This year they are on the road. They defeated the Hawks 34-7 last season to start the season on a four-game win streak.

After the trip to Texarkana, Byrd will then have four straight games at its home stadium, Lee Hedges Stadium. Huntington is on tap for Week 2 and Calvary visits a week later. Rival Captain Shreve opens District 1-5A play at Hedges with it being the Gators’ home game. Benton will then travel over for a mid-season matchup.

After a trek to Haughton to face the Bucs in Week 6, Byrd hosts Parkway the following week. One more journey over the bridge into Bossier City to face Airline will be the last regular-season away contest.

The Yellow Jackets finish the season with home games against Southwood and Natchitoches Central.

Byrd started last season with a four-game win streak and finished with an 8-4 mark. It was the third consecutive season with eight or more wins.
