Calvary’s Wood, Anderson lead SBJ All-Metro Softball Team

While Calvary Baptist’s offense put on dazzling displays on the way to its third straight state softball title, it was the performance of Kynzee Anderson on the mound that stood out during the season that ended with the Lady Cavaliers capturing the LHSAA Select Division III championship.

The freshman pitcher compiled a 22-9 record en route to being named Outstanding Player on the 2023 Shreveport-Bossier Journal All-Metro Softball Team.

“Kynzee had an amazing season this year with 324 strikeouts to only 77 walks,” Calvary coach Tiffany Wood says of her star pitcher, who made the SBJ All-Metro team as an eighth-grader last season. “She works hard and is constantly trying to perfect her pitches. I am so proud of her, and I enjoy the front-row seat to seeing her hard work pay off.”

Just how dominating was the Calvary offense this season? In the Lady Cavs’ four playoff games, they outscored their opponents 53-4, with three of those runs given up in their 13-3 victory over D’Arbonne Woods in the title matchup.

After leading the Lady Cavs to their third straight state title – and fifth overall – Wood has been named Coach of the Year on the 2023 SBJ All-Metro team.

“This year’s team, Team 19, is a very talented and special group,” said Wood, who captured COY honors for the second consecutive year. “They worked hard and fought through adversity to make history, claiming a 3-PEAT state title. We are so excited and still enjoying this year’s accomplishments.”

The All-Metro team, chosen with input from Shreveport-Bossier coaches, consists of one player at each standard position, three pitchers, three utility players and a designated player. The “Best of the Rest” is for those who were given strong consideration for the first team. Those selections were not chosen by position.
