Today is the last day of the regular season for LHSAA baseball teams throughout the state with one last game for most clubs before the playoff pairings are set Tuesday.

Power ratings drive the playoff brackets and four local schools are in the top 10 of their divisions according to Geauxpreps.com. Non-Select Division I Parkway is ranked No. 9. In Select Division I, Northwood is No. 4 and Captain Shreve No. 7. Calvary has a ranking of 5th in Select Division III.

The top 24 teams in Non-Select divisions will be slotted in brackets while Select divisions take the top 20 teams.

Other schools with good enough rankings for the playoffs include Non-Select Division I Haughton (No. 12), Benton (18) and Airline (23). In Select Division I, Byrd is No. 10, while in Select Division II Evangel is No. 12 and in Select Division III Loyola is No. 19.

Highlights from games played on Saturday included a couple of District 1-5A contests and a non-district win by Loyola over District 1-4A co-champion North DeSoto.

Parkway’s Colton Smith tossed a one-hit shutout in the Panthers 2-0 defeat of Benton Saturday. Smith didn’t walk anybody and struck out nine. Ashton Martin’s two-run single in the fifth accounted for the only runs on the day. Abel Thetford had a double for Parkway (19-8). Benton pitcher Cale Latimer allowed just three hits, two walks and struck out six in five innings.

Captain Shreve got a sterling performance on the mound from John Hoyet Chance who allowed three hits in six innings in the Gators’ 7-1 win at home over Airline Saturday. Senior Walker Wicklund was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI and Aron Gillum 2-for-2 with a double for Shreve (21-12). Collin Wiggins had two of the Vikings’ three hits in three at bats.

Loyola picked up a big win at Cicero Field with a 6-5 defeat of North DeSoto in nine innings Saturday. The Flyers got three straight walks with one out in the ninth and Hayden Horton scored Camden Crossno with a sacrifice fly for the winning run. It was Horton’s second RBI of the game. Gray Deason had three of Loyola’s six hits on the day.
