Bass tournament controversy can stem from unintentional blunders

As they say, records are made to be broken. Well, the same can be said of rules in a bass tournament.

Every bass tournament organization has its own set of rules and not all circuits are the same. Some tournament trails are called “team trails” and others are  called Pro/Am events in which a pro is randomly paired up with a co-angler. The pro fishes out the front of the boat and has total control of the trolling motor and where they fish, while the co-angler/amateur fishes out of the back of the boat and is not allowed to fish off the front deck.

While most of the rules are very similar, some circuits might have a couple of rules specific for what body of water they are fishing. But no matter what, it’s the responsibility of the angler to read, know, and follow the rules of each event. There are no excuses for violating a rule under any circumstances, especially not a plea of ignorance.

Let’s look at a controversy in a recent Bass Champs Team Trail event on Toledo Bend about the third-place team of Bill Cook and his partner Ken Burgess. First and foremost, most of the time when anglers violate a rule in a tournament, it’s unintentional. This does not make them cheaters; it means they violated a rule they didn’t realize was a rule. This Bass Champs event was a trailering tournament, which meant you could launch your boat anywhere on the lake but could not start fishing until 7 a.m.

On this particular morning, Bill and Ken left the ramp and headed for the area they were going to start fishing, arriving around 6:45. Around this time, Bill lowered the trolling motor with his Livescope screen activated. This was an immediate rules violation. Livescope is part of Garmin Electronics’ fish-finder system that is what anglers call a forward-facing sonar. It allows an angler to see fish up to 100 feet in real time.

The rule that Bill and his partner were not aware of was that you could not turn on your Livescope until the official start fishing time. They were, however, allowed to use their electronics before then, but only for navigational purposes.

After revealing how Bill and his partner caught their fish on an episode of Tackle Talk Live and the radio program Hook’N Up & Track’N Down, a tournament competitor heard how they were using Livescope before the official start time. This guy then called Bass Champs and reported the violation. Bass Champs verified the accusation and concluded that indeed Bill and Ken had violated the Livescope rule.

Bass Champs notified Bill that he and his partner would have to forfeit their third-place winnings of $2,700. Embarrassed and upset with himself, Bill posted his reaction on Facebook and apologized for the rule violation that he and his partner inadvertently committed. He never made any excuses and said no one was to blame for this mistake other than himself and his partner. They took full responsibility and emphasized that they should have done a better job of reading and understanding the rules.

From this angler’s perspective, Bill and Ken are two awesome individuals who made an honest mistake. But I can say with 90 percent confidence that out of 169 other teams in this event, there were others who violated the same rule but never came forward and admitted it.

If you were one of these in this category, shame on you for not being honest! One thing I’ve always praised about tournament bass fishermen is that most do hold themselves accountable whenever they break a rule, from forgetting to wear a life jacket while changing locations on the lake, to having more than five fish in the live well and forgetting to cull one.

It’s the responsibility of the angler to call the tournament director and report any violation when it occurs and accept whatever penalty or punishment that might be handed down. Rules are not intended to make things tougher on anglers. They exist to level the playing field for all anglers.

The message to take away from this story — always read the rules for all tournaments. Nothing is worse or more embarrassing for an angler than being disqualified from an event.

Until next time, good luck, good fishing and don’t forget to read the rules!

Scotlandville’s Booker proves too big for Huntington in state semis

A BIG CHALLENGE: Huntington’s Jacob Stewart (10) goes up against Scotlandville’s Dorian Booker (33), who had a game-high 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks in the Hornets’ 63-43 victory over the Raiders Wednesday. (Photo by RODRICK ANDERSON, Lake Charles American Press)

By HARRIET PROTHRO PENROD, Journal Sports

LAKE CHARLES – Just how big is Scotlandville’s Dorian Booker?

The announcers called him a 7-footer. The Hornets’ roster lists him at 6-10. And Huntington Raiders coach Mack Jones described him as 6-11 and 280 pounds.

Let’s just say the UNO signee is really big.

Too big for Huntington, which fell 63-43 to No. 1 seed Scotlandville in the semifinals of the LHSAA Select Division I boys’ basketball playoffs Wednesday afternoon at Burton Coliseum.

The Hornets, who have made it to the title game every season since 2009, will face No. 3 seed Catholic-Baton Rouge in Saturday’s finals. Scotlandville, which defeated John Curtis for the Division I title in 2022, is going for back-to-back championships and its eighth overall state title.

The Raiders (24-9) fell in the semifinals of the state tournament for the second year in a row.

“He did what he does,” Jones said of Booker, who finished with a game-high 25 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks. “He doesn’t try to get out of his game and he’s difficult to defend in the middle.”

The No. 4-seed Raiders didn’t go down without a fight, however.

Down by 14 points in the first minute of the second quarter, Huntington fought back to come within two just as the first half was ending. When Scotlandville’s C’zavian Teasett converted both ends of a 1-and-1 with 2.5 seconds left before the break, the Hornets were able to go into the locker room with a narrow 33-29 lead.

Trailing 22-9 after the first quarter, the Raiders outscored the Hornets 20-11 in the second quarter.

“Being down by 14 at one point and to cut it within two (right before the half), I’m proud of our guys,” said Jones. “It could have gone bad at that point.”

Trey Carter and Kentravis Green led the second-quarter comeback, leading Huntington on a 9-0 run that brought the Raiders’ within two right before halftime. Carter (2-for-3 from 3-point range) hit two from long-range while Green (1-for-2) sank one from deep to spark the comeback.

“It took a lot of energy getting back into the game,” added the Huntington coach. “We just couldn’t make shots in the second half.”

The Raiders, who shot just 35 percent from the field in the contest, were outscored 30-14 in the final two quarters. At the start of the third quarter, the Hornets went on an 11-0 run – led by Booker’s six points – to open up a 15-point lead.

The Raiders were only able to come within 13 points the rest of the game.

The outcome continued the state tournament funk for Huntington, which fell to 0-5 in semifinal playoff games, including losses to the top seed in the last three years.

Huntington was led by Chris Carpenter – who fouled out with 4:26 left – with 14 points, followed by Carter with 10. Taylor and Jacob Stewart added 8 and 6, respectively, for the Raiders.

“Our guys showed a lot of grit and fight,” said Jones.

Scotlandville dominated in the paint, outrebounding Huntington 30-22 – with 23 of those on the defensive end.

All-in-all, Jones was pleased with the performance of his team this season.

“It was grinding, especially after playing Southwood in the quarterfinal game,” he said.

Huntington, which finished second in District 1-4A, defeated undefeated in District 1-5A Southwood twice this season – 50-42 in the in-season matchup and 48-44 in last week’s quarterfinal game.

The Art of Sports Talking: ‘Bakkekball!’

A week from today and the day after that might be the best back-to-back days of the sports year, not counting Saturday-Sunday at The Masters.

We are talking about the beginning of March Madness. Games from Can ’til Cain’t.

Glory.

Actually, the Women’s March Madness begins Wednesday, so you can add a day to the fun. Men’s starts Thursday.

And actually AGAIN, you can go back to Tuesday, March 14, because that is the first day of the “First Four” play-in games in the men’s bracket: the winners of those four games will make it to the Field of 64.

And you can go back two MORE days to Sunday, because not only is that the day of some Power 5 tournament finals, it’s also Selection Sunday.

Let’s break it down quickly:

Selection Sunday, March 12: Men’s Selection Show is at 5 on CBS, Women’s at 7 on ESPN.

Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14-15: Men’s First Four.

Wednesday-Thursday, March 15-16: Women’s First Round, wall-to-wall games.

Thursday-Friday, March 16-17: Men’s First Round, more games than you can shake a peach basket at. And no, I won’t be at work those two days.

And the fun continues right on through the first few days of April. Because …

Women’s Final Four: Friday, March 31 and Sunday, April 2, Dallas, American Airlines Center.

Men’s Final Four: Saturday, April 1, and Monday, April 3, Houston, NRG Stadium.

True. It’s a lot to absorb. But we can do it. We just have to stick together.

And this after we just got through wrapping up Marsh Madness. Almost. (We’re looking at you, Calvary Cavaliers and Bossier Bearkats, who each play for state titles Friday, Calvary at 2 and Bossier at 6. Go Cavs and Kats!).

So to get us ready for the madness that is March NCAA basketball, a quick primer.

Back in the summertime, we had an Introduction to ‘Sports Talking’ and determined that The World of Sports has a language all its own, and that each individual sport has an even more specialized lingo. A field goal is different in football than in basketball. “Pin” is one thing in bowling and another in wrestling. A skater spins lots and lands; a second baseman spins once and throws.

And on like that.

Briefly, so you can talk the talk this month, know that a basketball is also a roundball or b-ball or the rock.

String music, coined by Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer Joe Dean of LSU, is a jump shot that goes through the hoop and touches nothing but net. It’s the opposite of an air ball, that touches neither net nor goal but instead just, well, air. Not a good look.

Foul trouble is when a player or team is in danger of reaching the limit of fouls allowed without disqualification or penalty. Foul trouble is also what you are in when you sit next to a fan who smells like an old sneaker. Fowl trouble is when the concession stand runs out of chicken tenders.

The bank is open if a player banks a shot in off the backboard. A double dribble occurs when a player is bouncing the ball, touches it with both hands, then touches it again. You’re in danger of a double dribble if you drink too much and the bathroom line is long. Don’t want that, sports fans.

technical or T is a penalty for poor conduct, in which case the player or coach might get T’ed up by the official. If you’re dropping dimes, you’re dishing out a lot of assists, or passing to other players who immediately score, maybe with a step back, off a strong post move to the rack (which is the basket), on an alley-oop or a fadeaway or layup or slam dunk, all different sorts of shots. If a person scores enough, they are said to be putting on a clinic, in which case they are probably schooling defenders.

It was my pleasure to drop some dimes for your basketball benefit. Enjoy the show. And stay out of foul trouble.

LSUS men win another trip to Kansas City

JOURNAL STAFF

The LSUS men’s basketball team defeated University of Pikeville 78-73 Wednesday afternoon to win the NAIA Tournament’s Alexandria Bracket and earn a return trip to the national tournament in Kansas City.

The Pilots (26-7) didn’t need another second-half comeback like the night before as they led 37-27 at halftime and extended the lead to 20 in the second half 50-30. The Bears, out of Kentucky, wouldn’t go away, closing the gap to 56-50 with a little more than seven minutes left.

LSUS pushed the lead back out to 13 (71-58) with 3:26 left and held off a late Pikeville rally that got as close as 77-73 with nine seconds left.

Calvin Carpenter led the Pilots with 20 points. Jalen Brooks had another double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Damon Davis poured in 16 as well and Devonte Snow rounded out the Pilots’ double-digit scorers with 12.

It will be the fifth visit to the Round of 16 for LSUS under the leadership of coach Kyle Blankenship. The Pilots will be trying to reach the round of eight for just the fourth time in school history.

The Shreveport-Bossier Prep Hoops Report – Volume 15: Marsh Madness

Marsh Madness has taken over the state! From Hammond to Lake Charles, champions have been crowned in the 10 girls’ divisions while the boys’ divisions are playing for their share of glory.

As far as local teams are concerned, we have crowned one champion (the Parkway Lady Panthers) with two more potential champions playing Friday (Bossier and Calvary Baptist). In this edition of the SBJ Prep Hoops Report, we will reflect on how we got to this point and what is waiting for Bossier and Calvary as they compete for state titles in their respective divisions.

Parkway breaks through in Hammond

There could have been a lot of anxiety on behalf of the Parkway Lady Panthers in Hammond.  They were facing the team that they lost to the year before in the same venue.  Whatever demons they might have had from that loss to Ponchatoula, they were exorcised by the Lady Panthers.

Scoring a game-high 34, Mikaylah Williams and her teammates avenged their state championship loss with a resounding 80-57 victory. WIlliams was named most outstanding player as she also grabbed 11 rebounds in the contest.  The Division I Non-select title was the first championship for Parkway in girls’ basketball and the first for coach Gloria Williams.

An instant classic on Rasberry Lane

As long as I can remember, Southwood and Huntington have always had intense matchups on the hardwood. The latest version of this rivalry was to see who moves on to Lake Charles and it was nothing short of a slugfest.

In a back-and-forth matchup last Friday night where Huntington led by as many as seven, it came down to senior Chris Carpenter making free throws while the Cowboys could not score in the last minutes of the game. 48-44 was the final and allowed the Raiders to move on to Lake Charles.

Two victories in one day

It is not often that teams win without their coach. However, Calvary Baptist punched its ticket to the Division III Select title game with coach Vic Morris sitting in a local hospital expecting his second child by having the ultimate pinch hitter — former head coach Chad McDowell.  The school’s top administrator filled in and helped the Cavs reach their fourth consecutive title game under his tenure.

While victory No. 1 happened on the hardwood, victory No. 2 came later that night as coach Morris and his wife had a beautiful, and healthy, baby girl. Hopefully, Calvary can take the momentum of these victories and manifest it into a state title as they face powerful Isidore Newman on Friday at 2 p.m.

Speaking of consecutive appearances

Dallas Kimball has a long tradition of being one of the best basketball powers in Texas hoops.  The fact that Shreveport native and Huntington alum Nicke Smith has been entrusted with this program speaks volumes to what he accomplished at Huntington and what he has accomplished at Kimball.

The Knights will play in their third straight Texas semifinal tonight at 7 p.m. against Veterans Memorial out of San Antonio. A win will take Smith to his second title game in three years.  What an accomplishment for the Shreveport native. Let’s see if Kimball can close the deal and make the third time a charm.

Nothing bigger than the B

Justin Collins and the Bossier Bearkats find themselves in yet another title game as they defeated top seed Wossman 48-42 on Day Two of Marsh Madness in Lake Charles. Tahj Roots, Lakavin Thomas, and Javon Johnson all scored in double figures, and they helped Collins, in his first year, reach the Non-Select Division II title game.

They will face none other than the No.3-seed Carroll Bulldogs in the finals. Carroll will be looking to avenge the quarterfinal loss from last season to Bossier and win its first crown for first-year coach and Carroll grad Brandon Landers.

A little lagniappe never hurt

Nobody is hurt by a little lagniappe. In this case, the lagniappe consists of shoutouts for some local accomplishments.

Southwood finished District 1-5A with a 14-0 mark. It was the first undefeated district season since 2003 for the Cowboys in District 1-5A.

Captain Shreve’s Gators reached their second quarterfinal in three seasons under coach Corey Deans.

Mikaylah Williams has garnered three POY awards.  She was named the Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year, Gatorade Louisiana Player of the Year, and MaxPreps Louisiana HS Player of the Year. Congrats to Mikaylah on all of her accomplishments.

Look for us to cover the finals and other basketball business when the SBJ Prep Hoops Report convenes next week. Until then, catch some basketball while you can!

Williams named Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year

REPEAT WINNER: Star Parkway guard Mikaylah Williams is  the Louisiana Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year for the second year in a row. (Photo by PETER FOREST, Journal Sports)

JOURNAL STAFF

A different day, another high-caliber award for heralded girls’ basketball star Mikaylah Williams of Parkway, soon to be an LSU Tiger, as she was named the Gatorade Louisiana Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year on Wednesday.

It is a repeat honor from last year for Williams, a 6-foot-1 guard, who averaged 17.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists  in her senior year, helping the Lady Panthers to the their first-ever state title, capturing the crown in Non-Select Division I with dominating wins in each playoff game.

Williams took the honor her junior year after averaging 22.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists and taking Parkway to a state runner-up finish, with a one-point, double-overtime loss in its first state final game.

The award came a day after she was awarded the Morgan Wootten National Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

Bossier’s Medellin, Rojas lead SBJ’s 2023 Boys’ All-Metro soccer team

ALL-METRO MVP: Bossier midfielder David Rojas was the unquestioned leader for a Bearkat team that finished as a state runner-up. (Photo by COLENE PIPES)

JOURNAL STAFF

Bossier’s boys’ soccer team finished an impressive year with a state runner-up finish in Division III and the leader of that team, junior midfielder David Rojas, has been chosen as the MVP of the 14-member Shreveport Bossier Journal All-Metro team, with the Bearkats’ Orlando Medellin picked as the Coach of the Year.

The 2023 team was selected by Journal writers with input from multiple boys’ teams coaches. The team is composed of the best 14 players in Caddo and Bossier parishes. Seven schools were represented this year, led by Bossier with four, followed by Captain Shreve with three. Caddo Magnet and Parkway had two players, while Benton, Northwood, and Byrd each had one representative on the team.

Bossier’s Medellin earned his second Coach of the Year award in a row after a spectacular season for the Bearkats. Bossier (23-3-2) ended as the Division III state runner-up, advancing to the finals for the first time in school history. It was no flash in the pan, after the Bearkats went to the semifinals last year. Also considered for Coach of the Year was Captain Shreve’s Greg Palmer, who led his team to a Division I, District 1 title. The Gators (13-8-3) gave two-time reigning champion Catholic-Baton Rouge all it could handle in the second round of the state playoffs, eventually falling 2-1.

The most debated award for the boys’ team was the overall MVP. There were three contenders, all juniors, for the award: Alexander Baltov, Caddo Magnet; Andrew Bradford, Captain Shreve and the eventual winner in Bossier’s Rojas.

Rojas was unquestionably the leader of the Division III finalists, as he kept the team in shape while directing the attack and keeping tabs on defending the counterattacks. Rojas scored 13 goals, while leading the team with 15 assists. His balance of speed and power was a force every opponent had to game plan against. Rojas earned Offensive MVP for his Division III, District 1.

Baltov had the same role for his Mustangs. He had 11 goals and 11 assists on the season, while being voted Offensive MVP of Division II, District 1. Bradford was voted Division I, District 1 overall MVP. He scored 14 goals and had seven assists.

These three will have another year to challenge for this award, a battle that all soccer fans get to enjoy watching next winter.

Islanders rally past NSU; no Big Dance for Demons

DEMON BOMBER:  Ja’Monta Black connected on four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points in Wednesday’s SLC Tournament title game loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. (Photo by CHRIS REICH, Northwestern State)

By JASON PUGH, Special to the Journal

LAKE CHARLES – Northwestern State’s eighth appearance in a Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament championship game could not have started better, or ended more painfully.

For the second straight game, the Demons blitzed their opponent early, building a double-digit lead in the first half, this time against top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – the regular-season champions and the 2022 tournament winners.

The Islanders leaned on that postseason experience, shook off the loss of Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year Terrion Murdix to an early injury,  and rallied past Northwestern State for a 75-71 victory inside the Legacy Center on Wednesday that denied the second-seeded Demons their first conference tournament crown since 2013.

The Islanders (23-10) advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Demons (22-11) may find their way into another postseason tourney after their most successful season in a decade.

Just as it happened in Tuesday night’s semifinal win against New Orleans, Northwestern blistered the nets, sinking its first four 3-pointers – two each by Ja’Monta Black and Isaac Haney – and built a 12-point lead less than eight minutes into the game.

The lead grew to 16 just past the halfway mark of the first half when DeMarcus Sharp, the league’s Player and Newcomer of the Year, hit a step-back jumper to put the Demons up 26-10 with 9:46 remaining in the half.

That’s when Owen Dease awakened the Islanders.

A 6-foot-8 freshman who had hit 6 of 35 3-pointers on the season, Dease hit both of his 3-point attempts in the first half, sparking Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s 21-5 run across the final 9:46 of the half, tying the game at the break.

“Guys on that team who hadn’t played much or been very productive throughout the year, they found a way to activate themselves and do a job to pull back from behind,” said first-year NSU coach Corey Gipson. “That’s impressive.”

Corpus built its largest lead of the game – the first of three separate eight-point edges with 4:50 to play on a Trevian Tennyson jumper. Again, NSU fought back, scoring six straight points all involving Sharp, who scored four and fed Greedy Williams for a layup to cut the lead to two.

Tournament MVP Jalen Jackson’s layup with 1:36 gave the Islanders their final eight-point lead, one the Demons nearly erased with a spirited 7-0 push spearheaded by a pair of Sharp buckets sandwiched around a Black 3-pointer.

Sharp’s final bucket of his 32-point performance pulled NSU within one, but the Demons could not overcome a second-chance Tennyson jumper and Black’s contested 3-pointer at the end did not fall.

Sharp earned all-tournament honors after averaging 31.5 points and eight assists in two tournament games. Freshman Jalen Hampton notched his team-leading sixth double-double of the year (12 points, 13 rebounds) to earn all-tournament honors as well. Black added 15 on 4-for-9 shooting from 3-point range, pushing his season total to 122, second-most in SLC history.

Special needs kids can enjoy hunting, thanks to Dream Hunt Foundation

When I was growing up in the country, if we wanted to hunt or fish, we went. There was no thought of needing help because every other kid I knew was like me; there were none with disabilities who weren’t able to do what I did.

Think of a youngster, nose pressed against the window glass as he sits in a wheelchair, legs supported by braces as he can only look longingly out the window at other kids doing what he’d love to do. His disability keeps them behind the window rather than being out and doing what his little heart wishes he could. Enter Jeff Warren and his organization for special needs kids, Dream Hunt Foundation.

You have to wonder how in the world Warren has the time from his full-time work in construction, remodeling and owning a crawfish restaurant to kick start an organization that helps special needs youngsters.

The mission statement for the organization, Dream Hunt Foundation, sets the tone for why he has continued what he started in the spring of 2013. It reads: ”Dream Hunt Foundation desires to take kids on the hunt of a lifetime. We want to provide them a positive experience in a tough season of their life, teach them principles from a trusted adult that goes beyond the hunt and create a platform to share the hope we have in Christ.”

Warren, who lives south of Shreveport in Stonewall, launched the organization because of his vision of putting something together that would give special needs youngsters the chance to participate in activities they previously could only dream about.

“Obviously, there is no way we could do what we do without having sponsors coming alongside of us, groups who believe in what we’re doing and are generously sponsoring events that help us fund what we do,” Warren said.

One such group, Dowlings Processing in Simsboro, is one of those groups that has come alongside Warren to help out. This Saturday, March 11, Dowlings is sponsoring a sporting clays shoot with funds generated targeting Dream Hunt Foundation.

“Dowlings is a great organization that helped us last year. They raised between $5-6,000 a year ago. When you think that it costs us about $500 a kid to get everything set up for an event, what they did a year ago gave 12 kids the opportunity to do something they would have never been able to do,” said Warren.

Anyone wishing to participate in the Dowling event should contact Colby Sherrard at Dowlings at 318-247-6451.

Other groups that have come aboard to help include a group in Bryceland that hosted a special feral hog hunt last year raising some $5,000. In addition, there are golf tournaments in Shreveport and Monroe and a sporting clays event in Ferriday along with a big raffle at the end of the year that raise funds for Dream Hunt Foundation.

“One thing of importance is the fact that what we do is not just for youngsters in our area,” said Warren. “Since the program began, we have had up to 2,000 kids from all around the country take part in the program. Our records show that we were able to offer 400 kids the opportunity for a special hunt or fishing event last year.”

Hopefully this message will touch the hearts of individuals who would like to get involved. Visit info@dreamhunt.tv to find out how.
