Colton Smith pitched a complete game four-hitter and struck out 11 as Parkway defeated Natchitoches Central 6-1 in a key early-season District 1-5A baseball game at Parkway Tuesday night.
The Panthers used a Zach Schoenborn two-run third inning single to take a 3-1 lead and Smith kept the Chiefs scoreless after their first-inning run.
Brandon Levy added a run-scoring single for a 4-1 lead in the third and another RBI hit in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.
Schoenborn and Levy both had two hits and two RBI and Shawn Driggers was 2-for-3 and a double and RBI for Parkway, who remained undefeated in 1-5A at 3-0 and is 14-3 overall.
For Natchitoches Central it was the Chiefs’ second loss in 1-5A in three games and third in 18 games overall.
HAUGHTON 9, AIRLINE 2: At Haughton, Austin Anderson doubled and homered at the plate and allowed five hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings on the mound to lead the Bucs to the 1-5A win. Anderson started the scoring for Haughton (14-5, 1-2) with a first-inning two-run homer and ended with a two-run double in the fifth that gave the Bucs a 9-0 lead. Trent McGowen was the only other Haughton player with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 as the Bucs took advantage of nine Viking walks. Airline (8-10, 2-1) outhit Haughton 7-5 as Mason Morgan was 3-for-4 and Braden Adams had a pair of doubles in three at bats.
CAPTAIN SHREVE 2, BENTON 0: At Captain Shreve, Walker Wicklund got the complete-game six-hit shutout and the Gators scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning in the 1-5A win. Bryson Pierce suffered the loss despite allowing just three hits and one earned run. He issued just one walk and struck out 10. Leadoff hitter Hudson Brignac was 3-for-4 and Cale Latimer and Gavin Jacobs both had doubles for Benton (7-12, 1-2). Captain Shreve remains undefeated in district (3-0) and improved to 11-6 overall.
BYRD 14, SOUTHWOOD 1: At Southwood, the Yellow Jackets started the game with a three-run first inning and scored eight runs in the seventh inning in posting the District 1-5A win to move to 12-8, 1-2. Southwood falls to 3-14, 0-3.
CALVARY 4, EVANGEL 1: At Calvary, Cade Bedgood’s three-run home run broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and Landon Fontenot struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings to boost the Cavs in the non-district win. Jason Legg was 2-for-3 with a double for Calvary (8-9). Landon Martin had three of Evangel’s six hits as the Eagles fell to 6-9.
