After first-round success on the road for local girls’ basketball teams in the LHSAA playoffs, the second time around was unsuccessful with everyone left by the wayside.
All six teams playing on the road for a second time were eliminated, but Benton and Haughton gave their heavily-favored opponents in the Non-Select Division I a run for their money.
Benton, a 17 seed, was paired with top-seed Walker (27-1). The Lady Tigers led after one quarter 14-12 and trailed by just 26-22 at half, but the Lady Cats outscored them 17-7 in the third quarter in taking a 49-35 win.
The Lady Tigers, who finished 20-13, were led by Chloe Bailey’s 11 points. Marissa Schloth added 10.
Haughton took its 19 seed to Lake Charles to play No. 3 Barbe at Sam Houston High School. The Lady Bucs battled before falling 57-50 and ended their season 24-11.
(2) Parkway 66, (15) Neville 17: One of two local teams playing at home after receiving a bye in the first round, the Lady Panthers easily dispatched the visitors from Monroe as Mikaylah Williams led all scorers with 21 points. Ty’lissa Henderson tossed in 17 and Chloe Larry 16 as Parkway improved to 27-5 heading into the quarterfinals.
(1) John Curtis 79, (17) Byrd 41: The Lady Jackets journeyed to New Orleans to face the top-ranked Lady Patriots but were overpowered. Janiya Vanderpool led Byrd (18-12) with 11 points and Sydney Young scored eight and grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds.
(3) St. Louis Catholic 76, (19) BTW 63: At McNeese State’s Legacy Arena in Lake Charles, the Lady Lions got 23 points from Asia Foster and Lakaira Harris added 10. Paris Guillory led all scorers with 31 and Gabbie Link tossed in 29 for St. Louis.
(2) Menard 55, (15) Loyola 20: The Lady Flyers dropped from the playoffs and finished their season with a 12-16 record as the Lady Eagles looked like a state championship contender.
(3) Houma Christian 43, (19) Calvary 22: The Lady Cavaliers’ memorable season came to an end on the road in a game played at E.D. White. Calvary finished its season with a 12-7 record after getting its first playoff win in school history.
