The theme of Week 3 of the high school soccer season was tournaments, with 10 local girls and seven boys teams participating in Bossier’s Futbol Classico Tournament.
They weren’t the only ones in tourney play. Byrd’s Lady Jackets attended the Soccer Classic in New Orleans, the Haughton and Airline boys teams went to the West Ouachita Tournament, and four local boys teams went to the Copa tournament in Lafayette.
In the Futbol Classico, Captain Shreve’s Lady Gators won the girls varsity bracket by going 4-0, with bracket wins over Neville (3-1), Benton (6-1) and Leesville (5-0). Shreve met Evangel in the finals late Saturday evening, and the Lady Gators won 7-0. Maddie Aubrey and Brooklyn Lattier each had three goals, and Bryleigh Burlison added the seventh. Emma Bradford had two assists, while also adding an assist each were Ryleigh Cram and Riley Kenney. Avery Watson had one save in the clean sheet.
The host Bossier boys won their bracket, also going 4-0 in the tournament. They defeated Caddo Magnet 1-0, Minden 6-0, and North DeSoto 8-0 in the group stage. They faced Neville in the finals, prevailing 3-0. They got first-half goals from Felix Deras and Joshua Campos. David Rojas put the game out of reach with the final goal in the second half. Deras added two assists, and Yoany Reyes also had an assist.
The Bearkats’ keeper, Logan Bamberg, had an amazing save late in the first half, from a 45-yard free kick that was headed just under the crossbar. He lunged at it and tapped it over the crossbar. The Bossier fan base let him know how special that save was.
The Lady Jackets went 1-1-1 in New Orleans with their only loss coming to last year’s D-I finalist St Joseph’s Academy, 4-1. They tied D-IV state champion Isadore Newman 0-0, while defeating Hahnville 2-1.
At the Copa tournament, in Lafayette, four local boys team made the trip — Benton, Byrd, Northwood and Loyola.
Benton went 2-1 defeating New Iberia 3-1, and Hahnville 3-0, while having a very respectable loss to two-time reigning D-I state champion Catholic of Baton Rouge, 3-0. Byrd went 1-1-1, defeating Ponchatoula 1-0, tying Mandeville 1-1, and also losing to Catholic-BR 6-0.
Northwood went 0-1-2, tying both Beau Chene 0-0, and Terrebonne 2-2, while losing 5-1 to Ouachita Parish. Loyola had a tougher time, going 0-3, each a close match. The Flyers lost to Northlake Christian 2-0, Ascension Episcopal 1-0, and Live Oak 1-0.
At the West Ouachita tournament, the Haughton boys went 1-1-1, while Airline’s boys went 1-2.
