Steve Carter Literacy Tutoring Program

More than 5,000 letters are being sent home today letting families know their Bossier Parish student qualifies for $1,000 in free literacy tutoring vouchers, thanks to a statewide program administered by the Louisiana Department of Education.

This new tutoring program is an additional tier of support for any Louisiana public school student in grades K-5 whose state reading scores were either below proficient on their beginning of year screener (grades K-3) or those students in grades 4-5 that scored below Mastery in ELA (English Language Arts) on the spring 2022 LEAP assessment. Only students identified as meeting the criteria are eligible and will be receiving letters.

The program is part of the Louisiana Tutoring Initiative and is named after the late Baton Rouge State Representative Steve Carter and is the result of Act 415 of the 2021 Legislative Session. Attached is more information from the Louisiana Department of Education as well as a sample letter going home with Bossier Parish students today. (See Below)
