The Glenbrook Apaches were aggressive from the get-go Friday night at Bossier High School. They converted an onside kick to start the game and needed just two plays and 23 seconds to take a lead on the Bearkats.
The folks in Bossier Parish had seen this act before – one written by David Feaster.
Feaster’s return to Bossier City, where he coached the Parkway Panthers for six years, was marked by 42-14 victory by his Apaches and visits with old friends, foes and players.
Keondre Wudtee, a Centenary football assistant and former Panthers quarterback under Feaster, took the action in on the Glenbrook sideline. Another former Parkway star, CJ Morgan, couldn’t enjoy the Apaches’ success as a Bearkats assistant. However, the Mississippi State product shared an embrace and a brief conversation at midfield following the game.
“I’m proud of those guys,” Feaster told the Journal. “And also Brandon Harris — the class he’s putting together at the University of Texas as the recruiting coordinator is awesome.”
Feaster has brought Glenbrook from a MAIS (MidSouth Association of Independent Schools) program into the LHSAA. The Apaches were 8-2 last fall, in their first year in Class A. This is the first season they will be eligible for the playoffs.
“I know they appreciate it,” Feaster said as he looked toward the large contingent of red and blue in the visiting stands. “These people have been MAIS all these years. They don’t know about Bossier High School and Class 4A. They didn’t know if I was doing a smart thing or not (moving to the LHSAA).”
Meanwhile, he helped sour the Bearkats’ homecoming festivities.
“I told our team, ‘On the Bossier side, there are probably five people who have ever seen Glenbrook play football,’” said Feaster, whose last season at Parkway was 2016. “They are going to get one impression of Glenbrook football. It’s going to be fun.’”
It certainly was for the visitors, who took a 42-0 lead by halftime.
With success at notable programs like Many, Minden and Parkway, Feaster is no stranger to winning big on Friday nights. However, things are different now, even for the guy who has seen stars like Kolby Copeland and Harris run his high-powered offenses.
Now, a Feaster runs Feaster’s offense. Son Ty Feaster was a machine Friday. He completed 16 of 20 passes (including his final 10 throws) for 196 yards and three touchdowns. As the kicker, he added every extra point and that perfectly placed onside attempt.
However, it’s a tricky dynamic. Last week, David Feaster felt like he let his son down – a feeling a father doesn’t want to experience.
“Last week was tougher on me than it has been with all those other guys,” said David Feaster, whose team escaped Cedar Creek with a 12-6 victory. I did a lousy job play calling.”
With a couple of interceptions and a fumble, Ty didn’t have a great evening, either.
“I hurt,” Feaster said.
Both Feasters got right against the Bearkats.
“It was good to come out of that,” said David, whose older son, Sammy, previously played at Glenbrook as a receiver. “I probably played (Ty) a series or two more tonight than I would have but we needed this. We’re going into a tough stretch against Delta Charter, Haynesville and Arcadia.”
Despite the emotional speedbumps the current coach-quarterback relationship provides, a big smile summarized the situation for the man who, for years, has dreamed of having his son run his offense for years.
“It’s awesome,” David Feaster said.
