Neville High School of Monroe has played Shreveport schools many times over the years but not very often during the regular season.
The last time it played an opener in Shreveport or Bossier City was in 1999 against Airline. The Tigers and Evangel Christian’s Eagles will open the 2022 season at Evangel tonight for the second time, the last coming in 1995. Neville has won three of the four meetings with the Eagles and overall the Tigers have a 61-18 record against Shreveport Bossier Journal teams. Neville will make a return trip in Week 3 to play Huntington at Independence Stadium.
NEVILLE (2-4A) at EVANGEL (1-4A), 7 p.m.
EVANGEL
- Lost to Mansfield, 28-23, in 2021 season opener.
- Only season-opening victory in since 2017 was a 63-0 triumph against Magnolia School of Excellence in 2019.
- Quarterback (Peyton Fulghum) and wide receiver (Parker Fulghum) are twin sons of former Eagles and LSU star Josh Booty.
- Eagles coached by Denny Duron, who just turned 70 last week.
- The last time the two schools played was in the 2016 Battle on the Border won by Neville 35-16.
WOSSMAN (1-3A) vs. BTW (1-4A), Messmer Stadium, 7 p.m.
BOOKER T. WASHINGTON
- The BTW-Wossman game has been moved to Messmer Stadium due to a construction issue at Leonard C. Barnes Stadium. The Lions have only played there once before (2006).
- The Lions have won only one of their last five season-openers. That came last year against Plain Dealing (45-0).
- BTW has played Wossman 13 times in its history, including the last three years. The Lions are 6-7 in the series.
- No injuries are reported from last week’s jamboree.
- Coach Tony Reliford is still deciding on how he will use his quarterbacks — senior Le’Devin Jackson and freshman Damion O’Neal – in the opener against Wossman. Each played in last week’s jamboree.
DELTA CHARTER (4-1A) at PLAIN DEALING (1-1A), 7 p.m.
PLAIN DEALING
- Plain Dealing would love to score a W in its home opener as the Lions will be on the road the next two weeks against Lincoln Prep and Lakeside.
- Bossier bested the Lions, 22-0, in jamboree play last week.
- Delta Charter will make the trip to north Louisiana from Ferriday and will make a similar trip in two weeks when the Storm plays in Minden against Glenbrook Sept. 16.
LAKE CHARLES PREP (3-3A) at MAGNOLIA CHARTER (1-1A), 7 p.m.
MAGNOLIA
- Tonight’s game marks the first meeting between the Mariners and Trailblazers.
- Magnolia is facing arguably the toughest non-district schedule of any 1-A team in the state – including three opponents that won eight or more regular-season games (and two of them won state championships last year).
- Despite their 1-9 record last season, the Mariners went to the playoffs – where they lost 52-12 to Basile.
- After going 10-1 in 2020, LCCP compiled an 8-2 overall record last season and went undefeated (5-0) in district play.
