“America overflows with excellent little museums, tucked away in small towns, and worth a detour or even a trip. One of those is the R.W. Norton Art Gallery.” – The Wall Street Journal
It is well-known around the world for its impressive collection of works by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. It is a teaching museum that uses art to encourage community participation in thoughtful interpretations and discussions. It houses an exceptional collection of art spanning more than four millennia. More than anything, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery is a vital part of the arts community in this region.
Shreveport native Emily Feazel, who has worked at the R.W. Norton Art Gallery for over 10 years, currently serves as the Designer of Exhibits and Special Events. Through her answers to some interesting questions about her job, we get to know more about the gallery – and Emily.
What is the most interesting part of your job?
I think the most interesting part of my job is working so closely with the collection. Our permanent collection ranges from 2400 BC early Egyptian works to contemporary art. Being able to work hands-on with these works is incredible. One day we’re rehanging a Rembrandt and the next we’re creating a new exhibition featuring pieces from the archives. It’s never a boring day!
What is the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is just not having enough time in the day! We have so much we want to do and sometimes it just doesn’t fit on the schedule. So many incredible ideas, but not enough time.
How has the Norton Art Gallery changed in the 10+ years you have been there?
The Norton has definitely changed since the museum opened in 1966. Not only the collection, but the building itself, and the community involvement. We’re so excited to be able to host events for families and make this a place where people want to spend their time. Whether it’s enjoying the botanical gardens or a scavenger hunt through the museum with the kids, we want everyone to feel welcome here and to feel at home.
What are some of the most popular exhibits that have been featured at the museum?
Over the years we have had some absolutely incredible exhibitions. A few of the most popular exhibitions have been the photography of Ansel Adams, the first solo exhibition of media darling and New Orleans native Ashley Longshore, the photography of E.J. Bellocq, and The World of Frida which featured over 100 international artists all creating works inspired by Frida Kahlo.
If you could feature any exhibit in the world at the Norton, what would it be?
There are so many artists and exhibitions that would be incredible to bring to the Shreveport community. Yayoi Kusama Infinity Room, highlights of Impressionism featuring Cassatt, Degas, Renoir, etc., and contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley are just a few on my wish list.
Why is the Norton Art Gallery so important to the community?
The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is not only important to the art community of Shreveport but to the community as a whole. Shreveport needs places that are safe and inspirational. We need places where we can enjoy time together as a family or with friends. How lucky are we to have an art collection right here in the heart of Shreveport that rivals many museums around the world? We have the Norton family to thank for their generosity in sharing it with the public free of charge and creating a space for young and old to enjoy.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my son and husband and with our friends. We love to travel, spend time outside, and just be together.
What are the top three items on your bucket list?
- Visit Paris.
- See the Aurora Borealis
- Go to a Christmas Market in Europe.
