District 1-4A teams should make deep playoff runs

By LEE BRECHEEN, Louisiana Football Magazine

District 1-4A it will be one of the toughest districts for Shreveport-Bossier teams this season because most of these teams are very similar in talent.

Class 4A will be made up of most of your “sleeper” Shreveport-Bossier teams.

The team with the most to prove is Evangel Christian Academy, a powerhouse program that went through three really tough years in a row. The great news in my opinion is the program has a chance to be the story of Louisiana in 2022.

Evangel started mostly sophomores, freshmen and juniors in 2021. I saw them in person play Class 5A Dutchtown in 2021 and left the game saying to myself, “Wow … all these players return and this group will be special in 2022 and 2023.” One of the few seniors back is FBS prospect defensive back Kody Jackson. This program has a chance to go from 3-8 in 2021 to a deep playoff run in 2022 for the first time in many years.

Huntington, led by head coach Stephen Dennis, has taken this program from 0-10 to a talented playoff team every year now. This 2022 team might be his most talented, and he returns his big-time quarterback leader of the program in Kamron Evans. This program will be playoff bound again, but the Raiders also have a chance to shock people and go deep into the playoffs with a ton of skill talent, some of the best in Shreveport-Bossier.

Northwood, if you did a talent poll on the top 10 players on a team, might be the No. 1 team in the Shreveport-Bossier area. These guys just need to stay healthy. Athlete, wide receiver, defensive back Mar’Jayvious Moss is one of the best players I saw play in Louisiana last year. Quarterback Mason Welch is another talented hidden gem among their top recruits in the class of 2023.

Both Bossier and Woodlawn have a chance to make the playoffs in 2022. Bossier is much improved after going 6-5 in 2021 under first-year head coach De’Aumante Johnson. The Bearkats have more talent now and a lot of energy among the players to succeed. Linebacker Christian Johnson is one of the best football players in the area.

Woodlawn is the sleeper team in Class 4A to me in 2022. The Knights were young in 2021 and are still young in 2022, but they have a ton of skill talent back, along with some really underrated linemen. Quarterback Isaiah Kennedy is a talented young player who can really shock some people in 2022; if he stays healthy, this could be another deep-playoff-run team. I saw this team play in 2021 and again was impressed with the amount of young talent they have in the program moving forward.
