Southwood replaces two non-district opponents

By LEE HILLER, Journal Sports

Southwood has replaced two of its three non-district opponents for this year’s football schedule that has it opening with Green Oaks, before playing old rival Woodlawn and then Carroll of Monroe.

The Cowboys have played everybody on the 2022 schedule at least two times in the history of the school. The opener against the Giants will be played at Northwood’s Jerry Burton Memorial Stadium. It will be just the third meeting of the schools with Southwood winning both in 1989 and 1990.

Southwood then faces Woodlawn, its only non-district holdover opponent from last season. Last year’s matchup was the first since a string of 31-straight seasons of playing each other ended in 2000.

Southwood’s first home game will have Carroll making the trip over from Monroe to Lee Hedges Stadium. The Cowboys hold a 2-1 edge in the series with the Bulldogs. The last time the two played was in 2008 when Carroll won 36-8.

Southwood will then begin its District 1-5A slate of games by hosting Natchitoches Central at Lee Hedges Stadium. It will go to Haughton before hosting Parkway and Benton at Independence Stadium the next two weeks. The Cowboys will play their next two games at Lee Hedges, the first against host team Captain Shreve and the next as a host to Byrd. They end the regular season across the river at Airline.
