Calvary Baptist got the only runs it needed in the first inning and added some insurance in the seventh to defeat Catholic-Pointe Coupee 6-0 Thursday in the first game of a best-of-three series in the LHSAA Division IV baseball playoffs at Hornet Park in Ventress.
Blaine Rogers shut out the Hornets over six innings of two-hit ball with three walks and eight strikeouts to get the quarterfinal win for Calvary. Landon Fontenot struck out two of the four batters he faced in the seventh inning to get the save.
The Cavaliers only had two hits themselves through six innings but a pair of walks and an error helped lead to two runs in the first inning.
Caden Flowers and Jackson Legg both walked and a Cody VanNoppen single loaded the bases with one out. Aubrey Hermes reached on an infield error that scored Flowers. Cade Bedgood drove in Legg with a single to left field.
Rogers kept the 2-0 lead intact until the Cavs scored four more runs in the seventh. Rogers led off the inning by getting on by error. Fontenot and Blayne McFerren both singled to load the bases with one out. Flowers then hit a ground ball that was misplayed into two runs for a 4-0 Calvary lead. Hermes upped the lead with a two-run single to make it 6-0.
Calvary (23-14) finished with five hits with Hermes driving in three runs and Flowers two.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 4 p.m today in Ventress with the Cavaliers being the home team.
