Phipps’ hit sends Northwood past Minden in 1-4A baseball

Hayden Phipps’ seventh-inning double scored Tucker McCabe with the winning run as Northwood stayed unbeaten in District 1-4A and handed Minden its first district loss 3-2 at Minden’s Griffith Stadium on Wednesday.

McCabe was on second after getting his third hit of the game, a double to left field.

Jaxon Bentzler got the win for Northwood (19-6, 2-0) with a complete game five-hitter.

Northwood scored its other two runs in the second inning on an error and bunt single by McCabe for a 2-0 lead.

Minden (12-7, 2-1) tied the game with two runs in the sixth.

AIRLINE 19, SOUTHWOOD 9: Tyler Ferguson had a double among his four hits, Harrison Waxley ripped a homer among his three and Clayton Brandon had two doubles among three hits for the Vikings, now 6-1 in District 1-5A and 13-8 overall. Airline, which pounded out 22 hits, also got two hits from Caleb Hemmings who had a double, while Noah Littleton tripled and singled, Carson Carey doubled and singled and Matthew Scripture had two hits. Waxley had four RBI and Littleton three. Evan Wendrock got the win by pitching two innings, allowing no hits, walking one and sitting down two.

Devin Watkins, Hunter Wallace and Brayden Harrington all had two hits for Southwood (5-19, 0-7)

LOYOLA 15, BOSSIER 0: Noble Means had a three-run triple and Colin Lirette, Reagan Coyle and William Soignier each had two RBI as the Flyers improved to 3-0 in District 1-3A and 14-10 overall. Freshman Jarrett Belanger (3-1) got the win. Loyola will play North Webster in a district doubleheader today at 4 p.m. in Springhill.

SOFTBALL

BENTON 12, PARKWAY 1: Christina Gegg hit two home runs as the Lady Tigers finished up District 1-5A play in a tie for third with Haughton with a 5-2 record. Gegg added a single to the home runs and drove in three runs while Piper Stephens had two doubles and four RBI. Sophia Livers lined a double in her 3-for-3 day, Megan Risher ripped a triple and single and Marissa Schoth hit a three-run home run for Benton (17-7). Chloe Larry was 2-for-2 for Parkway (8-11, 2-5).

NORTHWOOD 11, HUNTINGTON 1: The Lady Falcons had four-run second and third innings and took advantage of 14 walks to post the District 1-4A win at home. Addyson Hemphill and Emily Balentine both walked three times while Hailey McKnight, Selena Nunnery, Lilly Cooper, Hannah Ward and Isabelle Wright all scored two runs. Cameron Clark was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits in five innings. She walked one and struck out nine.

ST. MARY’S 15, EVANGEL 3: The Lady Eagles got a two-run home run from Gabbi Olague. Haven Brooks had a double and Rachel Turnbow knocked a triple. Evangel is now 7-14 on the season.
